I apologize for the cruel joke. I have been fooled so much on April 1st(s) that I had to return the favor to the world.

But I want a score editor too so I apologize for that.

Not only was there not one in 3.5, I learned that there will not be an integrated score editor in Reaper 4.0 either.

I have already gone through most of the stages of denial, anger, depression, cursing, etc.

I am taking another look at TuxGuitar in the Reaper Stash
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/4709/TuxGuitarMod021210.rar

and at MuseScore

Default The 1,000,000th person to request that Reaper have a decent MIDI Notation Editor

I don't mind making a feature request, but I would prefer to make one that has some chance of happening.

There have been many requests for some form of Midi Notation Editor in Reaper, but 4.0 will be released soon, and it still will not have one. The guys who run this thing don't use one, don't need one, and think that we don't need one either. Do they even read music? Are they just drummers and guitar players? I am not exactly classically trained, but I use a Staff View for composing and editing.

Should I just be the 1,000,000th person to request that Reaper have a decent MIDI Notation Editor?

I think that REAPER's philosophy is to make interface for external midi editor rather than repeat the path of score editor development.
But sure... Right now there is no good example of such integration.

He may have dropped the project because of low interest by users, many of whom believed that Reaper would soon have its own MIDI Notation Editor.
[MOMENT OF SILENCE]
Please observe a moment of silence for all the Reaper users who have died over the years waiting for Reaper to release a MIDI Notation Editor.

Default Still Waiting to see about V4

I haven't seen "official" notice that V4 won't have a notation editor; my understanding is that new features may still be added during the alpha cycle.

The earlier post about lack of interest in the earlier projects while hoping it would be in V4 was the case for me also. But my plan is to resurrect the work if/when we're sure it's not in V4. Regardless of how much other interest, I want it for my own work with Reaper.

A couple of reminders from the earlier posts and work on this project:

1. There are three open source Java projects with notation editors which could be used: TuxGuitar as discussed here, Frinika, and Improviser. There are advantages and disadvantages of the notation editors in each, and it's not out of the question to make all of them available since I've done a lot of the preliminary work anyway and that integration work is not likely to be much different with new releases of them.

2. The initial thread discussing this work outlined a design to use the Reaper SDK to hook into Reaper so that the external editor and Reaper could exchange updates "in real time" so to speak. We should resurrect that work also and see how far it can be taken.

Later,
Hartley

I will check out Frinika and Improviser.

Are these guys geniuses (compared to the Reaper developers)?

Default where?

I quickly read through that forum entry and didn't notice anything definitive. (?) I did see a post from Schwa on 1/9 mentioning that a Notion View of some sort was "in the works" whatever that means.

I don't know why this needs to be a mystery; if we know it won't be there, we'll get busy on the alternatives.

If it is a mystery, it is because they don't want to say it.
There will be no MIDI Notation Editor in Reaper 4.0
They don't use one. They don't need one. They don't think we need one.

Before REAPER I used FL Studio 5-9 and since 5 version call them for at least viewing ready without tools to edit it - no any results... People said that ...the rectangles and lines (automation) is more convenient for electronic music and that classical music people should do in another program...

I got this sorted out and can open a MIDI item in Tux from within Reaper. I even managed to avoid installing Java, simply copied it and made a few tweaks.

But... when I make changes within Tux, those changes do not show up in Reaper when I quit Tux. Reaper makes a new take, but it is identical to the old one.

Is it just me...?

Default Export?

Did you do the Export step from TuxGuitar that's explained in the Readme? Unless that's done, the midi file remains within the TuxGuitar project and Reaper won't see it.

"Export"?
"Readme"?
You mean I'm supposed to do something myself! I'm flabbergasted...

Just joking, of course. No, I didn't read it, sorry about that, I will now. Thanks for replying.

Here is the Readme:

Modified TuxGuitar for Reaper Notation

Version 1.0.0.0.1

Hartley Mays

February 13, 2010

Installation:

1. You must have a Java 1.6 JRE (or JDK) installed on your system. If you don't already have it,
download from the Sun java website:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

2. Download the TuxGuitar .rar file from the Misc section of the Reaper stash:

https://stash.reaper.fm/v/4709/TuxGuitarMod021210.rar

3. Extract the complete folder on your pc whereever you want to. The resulting folder structure should
have folders "dist" and "share", and "tuxedo.exe" within folder TuxGuitarMod021210.

4. Bring up the Preferences Window in Reaper, scroll to the bottom, and select "External Editors".
Assuming you don't currently have something set up for midi editing, use the "Add"
button, and create an entry for "mid" (NOT ".mid") files. Use the browse option to point to the
"tuxedo.exe" file in the extracted project folder. Select OK a couple of times to save the
updated Preference setting.

5. This completes the installation.

Usage Notes:

1. Right click on a midi item, position the cursor on the "open item in Midi Editor option, and then
select either "open item with tuxedo.exe" or "open item copies with tuxedo.exe". This should start
TuxGuitar.

2. A Dos console window will open which will have all the system output. If you have a problem, please
copy it to help in problem determination.

3. You'll also get a splash screen about joining the TuxGuitar community. You can check a box on this
screen to not see it again, after deciding whether you want to join.

4. The midi item you selected in Reaper should now show in the staff at the top of the TuxGuitar window.
You can adjust the size of it by expanding the window vertically and then dragging the bottom edge of
the score portion downward so that more of it is visible. You can also use the View menu item to
control which of the other views such as tablature you Want to show on the screen. You can change
which clef is used by selecting Composition -> Clef from the menu.

5. Use the Help menu item to view HTML pages that contain detailed information about how to use
the score editor and other features if you're interested.

6. You can update the midi file by making changes on the score, following the directions in the Help f
file.

7. The changes can be saved back to Reaper by selecting File -> Export Midi. It does not happen
automatically when you close the TuxGuitar window for now.

8. When you close the TuxGuitar window, you'll be asked about unsaved changes. If you want to, you can
save the item in native tuxguitar format at this point. It will have a .tg extension. However,
you must close this instance of tuxguitar before proceding with editing another item in your Reaper
project. This is a limitation that the socket communication will address if we proceed forward with
the TuxGuitar editor.

9. You end the session by closing either the console window or the TuxGuitar window.

Changelog

Version 1.0.0.0.1

* Added displays (System.out.println) of java settings including path and home to initialization to aid in
problem determination.
* Moved the Share folder to the dist folder so it's at the same level as the Tuxedo.jar.
* Added this readme .txt file to the distribution.

--------------------------
Not in the Readme:
And if the program button icons do not show for you, see post 31 in this thread for the solution. That is what I did, and it worked.

Is this plugin still alive or depricated? Is there a better way to edit scores?

Default Not deprecated

Mike,

I'm not currently working on anything new for it, but if you have a specific problem, I'll try to look at it. There's another project available on the stash that uses the Musescore open source notation editor. You could take a look at it.

Pipeline,

What happens currently with the fingering? I don't try to use any of the guitar specific features of Tux with it, just the notation.

Couple of questions:

Does TuxGuitar have to start and shutdown each time you want to edit a new Reaper MIDI item?

Also, do you happen to have the link to the MuseScore project you mentioned which is in stash?

Thx

The Musescore tool may not actually be in the stash; there's a link to download it at the top of the thread that discusses it in the developer forum:
