Default Do Audio Devices Participate in Rendering?

Hello:

I was wondering whether the audio device actually does any work during rendering or if that is all handled internally in the Reaper application?

I have an RME Fireface 400 that I use for tracking, but have run into issues with multiple instances of the Waves Rverb VST plugin crashing Reaper (and Dr. Watson!) during rendering (though not during playback or recording). I can get the project to render if I use the WaveOut audio device, but I'm worried about whether that means I'm losing something during rendering since the ASIO RME device is clearly the better device.

Thanks for any help anyone might be able to provide.

if you have outboard, it does. If not? you could easily turn off your device and still render

no, they do not have anything to do with the purely digital act of rendering

So does that mean we should be able to Render a midi composition to a multi-channel set of wave files using a crummy integrated sound card on a laptop?

Would it just take longer to do it?

Choosing a different device type will possibly change the buffer size, which WILL affect the render. It shouldn't be audible, but the plugin will work with different sized chunks of data.

What are your asio/waveout buffer sizes?

You can override the render buffer size in reaper options. Try setting it to 2048.

The only problem with onboard soundcards is when you make DECISIONS on the mix or sound. Rendering is purely a function of the cpu applying all the math and creating a new file on the hard drive; the soundcard is not involved.

Wow, that was fast. Thanks for all the replies fellas. I've updated the drivers on the Fireface (RME just released a new driver in mid-December) and things seem to now be working, but its good to know that should I have to resort to the WaveOut again for rendering I'm not shaving bits or samples or otherwise compromising the sound. Thanks again for taking the time. Ok, back to making music. --john

dub3000:

I'll have a look at the buffer sizes if/when I run into this again. Thanks dude. --john
