Default WDM kernal streaming (what is this thing?)

Once upon a time my little kick dog of a netbook would sound off fine in reaper without any profile tampering.

Now the last two times I've formatted the only sound device option that works without crackling is this WDM kernal streaming, and it took me a coons age (where did that saying even come from?) to find out this WDM kernal streaming would work fine.

Did WDM kernal streaming used to be a default setting or something? Could someone explain more about this?
