Default Edit MIDI file outside of Reaper

Is it possible to take the midi file (for example: untitled.mid) Reaper created in a track, edit it and save it afterwards so that Reaper takes the updated version?

I haven't seen any .mid files in the Reaper project folder.

If you hace already MIDI items in your project you can use the action "Convert active take MIDI to .mid file reference"

Small addition to The Movie of Justin: you don't even need to change the preference to create new MIDI items as *.mid files - you could always make already recorded/created items as external: do the search in Actions list for "Convert active take MIDI to .mid file reference". The opposite maneuver is: "Convert active take MIDI to in-project MIDI source data".
