Default Acoustic song 'Boneman'

Here's a song recorded and mixed in REAPER in the songwriters loungeroom. He layered all the parts and we're quite happy with the result. Organic earthy kind of piece, a little dark.

I hope someone enjoys it, I just wanted to share some of my work.

Very warm and rich sounding production, despite actually being sparse.

Loved the tone of the acoustic gtr as well as the way the shakers are mixed in.

Compositionally, this touches all the right areas for me , from Bowie to Cash and Waits.

Its very rare to hear sometiing from you Hamish and in light of this i wanna hear more !

But the comments seem unclear as to who did what ? Did you mix this only or perform or both ?

Oh, thanks suleiman. I recorded and mixed it, the songwriter is someone else, so that's him singing and playing guitar. I did play some guitar and mandolin on some of the other tracks.

He is planning to make videos for all 12 songs, and put it on YouTube to promote is maskmaking business. He has promised me the part of a gorilla in one, and my son may play a monkey. I'll let you know when it's up.

Sounds good, really good !
very interesting and different track.

Did you record this live, as in all playing together and recorded in one take ?, its got a very live vibe about it which i love.

Whats the song writers loungeroom ?

Nice job

Cheers

Glad you liked it wolf and garrick! Means a lot, I'd really like develop my technique further with this kind of music, here are some of the main things I did.

This guy plays around town with a band that I mix sometimes, and he loves to jam at parties and so on. I decided to record him in his loungeroom as he plays to the room acoustics really well, tapping his foot loudly on his wood floorboards.

I recorded most songs vocal and guitar first, which was in fact six tracks, 1+2) stereo ribbon (Cascacade X-15) 3) Guitar DI (nice Takamine) 4) AKG D112 mic on his tapping foot 5) AT small diaphragm condensor as vocal spot mic 6) Rode NT2A as ambient room mic.

After this he layered various parts, in this song just percussion and B.V.'s.

To wet up close mic'd things like the djembe I captured an I.R. of his loungeroom using ReaVerb. I did also use a little algorithmic reverb here and there, I love TDL 'Proximity' for adding high-end roll off and early reflections, then the trusty 'Ambience' for any special FX reverbs.

I mixed with plenty of compression on things, occaisional multiband or side chained. No tape sim, but just a master limiter for 'glue' with about 2 dB of makeup gain and LOTS of attention to attack, release and detector HPF. In this one the limiter pumps a bit as the bass builds up with the main chorus crescendo, but we have discussed it and will keep it.

This is an awesomely raw track.
It's like some dude is playing and singing this in the lounge room next door, in front of the fire place... the lights off, surrounded by a couple of unsullied drifters.

Which is a bit weird 'cause I dont have a fire place...
Holy shit, where's my six shooter!

I love that deep, breathing, reverby sound throughout. Gives it an eerie feel along with those smashing, twangy guitar stings.
And vocals are great. So much feeling.
Great mix

The production is near perfect. The song is well played and the instruments are clear, but they still sound very natural, so no overproducing here. Maybe the lead vocals are a bit too loud for my taste, but they sound good so it's not a real problem.
The song has nice dynamics. It feels very real. The panning of the instruments is very good.
There's some very sweet licks on the guitar and the final chords is wonderful with the buzzing guitar string. That's perfect.
