Default Faked-up bluegrass

Hello friends. Sorry I haven't been around for a bit. Work, family, life - you know the rest.

Anyway I was asked to sing a Lyle Lovett song at a gig recently and I thought I'd record it. Song reminds me a bit of my dad who was a boat nut when he was a young man. As we are scattering his ashes this weekend I thought it would be nice to get this song recorded for the family.

I haven't done much checking against other material (I really wish we could route media explorer to a track to make this easy) so any help with mix crit and/or overall sound crit would be very much appreciated as ever.

Mainly I hope it gives you good cheer in a 'screw-you-world' kind of way

Hi Spike,

Glad to hear from you again. Super performance. Your vocal style fits perfectly. Nice mandolin and tasty dobro touches. Recording sounds great here. I'm listening to this on some pretty wonky speakers and if it sounds good on them, chances are it will sound great elsewhere.

I hope that folks sing something like this at my funeral. I'm sure that your family will treasure this recording and pull it out to play every so often just to bring back memories.

Spike,

Nice rendition. Technically the mix sounds excellent -- I like the tamborine shake, cuts through just enough without being distracting. Good work.

(Sorry to hear about your father -- my dad's ashes, at his request, were scattered in the Pacific Ocean, California -- he was ex navy and loved the sea)

Great recording and mix, spike. Your voice is really well suited to this style. I don't hear anything that I would change. The mandolin sounds brilliant. The leads (and indeed, all the parts) are all fantastic.

It's really close to perfect, spike. If this was on my desk, the only thing I might experiment with is pushing the vocals up by 1 or 2dB. I think there is room for that, but it's fully subjective.

Overall, you completely and absolutely nailed this. It sounds wonderful. Stellar job.

We've already spoken of your father, but once again, I'd like to offer my thoughts and condolences. I get the sense that he was a wonderful man who continues to be much loved. This is a beautiful tribute.

I really it. A good mixture of sounds that work well together. Nicely arranged.

I wonder whether it's slightly too 'dense' sounding occasionally (loudness wars and all that ). But I'm listening on headphones because one of my monitors is in for repair.

Hey Spike, long time no see, great to see and hear you back.

And back with a bang as well, i've alwayes liked this song, one of Lyles best imho.

And what a great version you've done, its just alive right from the start, love the mandolin, and the slide parts are just spot on, everything just works really well together.

I'm sure this song will bring happy memories for your family Spike.

Well done mate.

Cheers

Spike - I live in bluegrass country. Never heard better. Did you play everything?

Thanks very much everyone. We scattered the ashes where the land meets the sea and it seemed right and proper - can't ask for more than that.

Kyle - I did play everything. I'm quite pleased that it seems to cohere and hopefully doesn't sound too layered.

Mostly pleased with the acoustic guitar sound (which I am usually unhappy with) and with the bass which is my electric with the strings damped a bit with a duster and then through a stringbass impulse in reaverb. Surprisingly effective to my cloth ears

Thasnk again freinds for your kind and warm words.

I like this a lot. The vocal especially. Some of the instrumental parts could be rhythmically tighter if one was looking for technical perfection - but the vibe beats that.
