Default Panning Law - why is Reaper's default +0?

Hi all

I'm new to Reaper, currently in the process of making the switch from Cubase SX3.

I imported some audio this evening and couldn't work out why the Master outs why louder (and clipping more) compared to Cubase. For once I managed to figure it out for myself rather than consulting the forums.... It was because Cubase's default stereo pan law is -3db whereas it is +0db in Reaper.

I've just had a very quick Google and it seems -3db is a popular choice.

I wondered if anyone could tell me:

1. Whether I'm right in saying -3 is a good choice.

2. Why Reaper's default is +0?

Many thanks

Max

Just for the info for using pan law -3 with folders:

Setting the pan law to -3dB will decrease all volumes in parent tracks.
You can boost pans if you want to compensate for that.

In dual pan mode (with e.g. -3dB pan law) you should disable 'boost pans'.

For me the 0.0 pan law setting makes sense if you're keeping stereo tracks hard panned and mono tracks centered.
Having some level of attenuation in and towards center makes the pan-knob work a bit better IMO. -3dB is what I work with too. Just pick one and go with it, at least don't change it in the middle of a session

BTW Protools used -2.5 (newer versions I think you get to choose your self) and SSL 4k desks was around -4.5….

My general rule is, "Don't upgrade or switch software in the middle of a project."

Since you are adjusting the faders while mixing anyway the pan law shouldn't matter, unless doing something like moving the guitar from left to right during the song. If you are "live panning" like that, then -3dB should give you constant power as you pan-across the soundstage.
