Default 88 note piano

why does it go below C1 by 3 half notes, whilst it ends on C8?

Why does that matter? Probably some popular piano manufacturer decided on that on the request of some composer hundreds of years ago and things have stuck that way...(There are also rare pianos that reach lower than the usual low A.)
