Default No sound with midi keyboard

Keyboard - M Audio keystation 61es
Soundcard - ASUS Xonar DS
MS Windows 8.1

I have followed the instructions for recording from this keyboard in Reaper and have it enabled. I am using a front USB port. The problem may be with my sound recording settings. When I switch on the keyboard, my record device box pops up. I am not sure which device to select. The logical choices seem to be - Line In, Aux, Front Line in 1, Stereo mix and Wave. I have tried enabling each of these in turn but nothing seems to work.

you are recording midi only from the keyboard...

midi does not make sound in and of itself...

you need a VSTi on that track to hear something...

your main road block is your audio card... that is what we call a consumer card...

You would do much better with a real audio interface...

umm you might get and give ASIO4ALL a try with that sound card... at least it will give you an emulated ASIO driver.

I have loaded different VST's and can hear the notes through my speakers when I click on the onscreen keyboard. However, nothing happens when I press the keys on the midi keyboard. I downloaded and installed ASIO4ALL but this has had no effect.

I previously used a midi keyboard with Windows XP and remember having to go into the sound control mixer to get Windows to accept the input from the keyboard. I am now using Win 8 and the commands in the recording and playback are different and I have no idea which device to enable.

you do have the driver installed for the keyboard right?

if so, go to your Reaper Audio/midi device settings and select your keyboard for midi. (your OP suggests you may have already done this)

You should see (im pretty sure) the red lines in the metering jump when you play the keyboard on an armed track.. If not you may have to look at th i/o settings but I think a default new track will work. You can search the free pdf manual (id be more detailed but im not at my daw and have a bad memory)

Then Arm the track you have your VSTI on

on the VSTi track, set it to Record Armed and Monitoring ON [little green speaker icon]...
set the input to MIDI All or at least MIDI in from your keyboard

then play your keyboard and you should hear sound...
