Default Proggin my ass off

the music for this song was written by a friend of mine who's doing his own mix in Logic. i liked the song so much that i wanted a version to post here in our forum, so i had him send me his drums and music stems for me to mix and add my vocals in Reaper.
i knew he was a big time prog guy, so i tried to follow suit vocally and melodically.

...a black Jon Anderson???
...surreal... :|

Duane aka Les_Kloo all music and composition
Me: vocal, melody, lyrics

Warning: long one...

Very cool stuff, sammydix. I hear a lot of influences here. It's always interesting when a musician steps out of their normal element. It always ends up fresh!

Cool!
You truly are a multi-genre wizard with vocals.
Still always recognizable as you.

One thing that distracted from the whole was that somewhat buzzy rhythm guitar sound.
But that's small stuff - probably if I'd listen a second song in a row, I would've already gotten used to it.

Why don't you guys perform with this? You seem to have lots of talented friends. It'd be a hit. I'm sure.

(Still listening... man, this is far out...)!

well, i've never really sang it much, but i listen to a LOT of prog/avant garde stuff: KC, Porcuine, G.Giant, Yes, Zappa, etc...

i like standard rock just for the raw release of it, but i like the more esoteric stuff for the challenge of it.

thx man.

yeah, Duane comes up with some excellent songs. not so much in this song, but he has a lot of Fripp influence to his style. so i threw in a little Belew influence vocally also.

my version is, but i he told me his mix will be around 9 mins or so. guess he's either gonna add more or rearrange stuff--or both.
i do know for sure that he plans to separate the mellow tambura section and place my vocals a capella there.

good for my palette too TQR. i live in a downtown Atlanta high rise, so neighbors are NEAR. so i have to do 'constrained' screaming.
it's like torture man. i just wanna open up with no limitations when i sing the harder stuff...that's why i stay away sometimes.
just too damned frustrating!!!

You should make a roadtrip with your laptop into the wilderness and scare the wildlife.

HAHA!!!

i got a huge den closet and tried holing myself in there while standing behind a ton of clothes, but it was to much of a hassle.

Great! Vocals are great as usual. I can hear the Fripp influences at times... Great song and arrangement.

Not diggin' the mix though. The guitar tone is weak and harsh, too much mids scooped IMO. Mix is a little dry compared to your other mixes which have great separation and clarity. Just my honest opinions though, ignore as necessary

not surprising since i hate it too. hehe
he sent the stems pre-rendered and i work better with stuff RAW. i'm just not good enough to mix pre-eq'd/compressed stuff together. that was a first and a last as far as i'm concerned. i did it only because i liked the song so much, but this is a Reaper forum and to use his original just didn't feel right. but i stress: never going thru that again!

note to self: Shemp is always right

Those amazing ideas, that great programming, terrific bass and off the scale vocals definitely deserve much more interesting ryhthm guitar.

I'm in line with what Shemp noticed. I gotta tell you that the bass sounds awesome to my ears in a couple spots though. Did you do anything special with the bass track?

I love your lyrics in this tune too. Incredibly clever.

his original title for the music was Verbing Common Noun, and since i like to keep the composer's title and work with it, i came up with the words based on that.
i used Instant on the bass track.
