Remix contest entry (feedback request)
Howdy folks,
I'm working on a remix contest entry. At the same time I'm trying to adopt a better mixing technique, i.e. using busses/submixes and sends, as well as using minimal compression. There's a little more EQ going on than I'd like but it's the only way I could balance the instruments the way I did.
Besides being terribly out of time, is there anything I should have a look at?
I'm going for a newgrass/country sounding something.

Thanks for checking.
Giving the original would be rather useless, because it's basically an entirely different arrangement (I only kept the vocals).
Cheers!

Sounds great to me, much better than any of my mixes
Good spacing/separation on the mix, all the instruments sound "natural," if that makes any sense. I like that the bass can clearly be heard but is not overpowering.
Keep it up. Good work

Thanks!
I'm not totally satisfied with the placement of the instruments. The guitar competes with the vocal in the middle, if I put the mandolin up the middle the snare competes with it. I could try placing the banjo in the middle, however. I suppose the banjo might compete a little less with either vocal or snare, despite it being a drum with strings.

I really like what you've done with this song !! i love this style of song and combination of instruments ( i'm a huge Newgrass fan )
Did you play all the instruments ?
With the mix, the vocals sound great, the bass also sounds good but the rest of the instruments sound a little dull, in comparison.
I guess EQ is your first stop to remedy that.
I also find placing acoustic guitar, bass, vocals and drums centre that i end up with frequency problems, I'd try moving the acoustic guitar of centre for a start see what that does.
Sometimes i'll save a new version of the mix and just mess around with instrument placement until i find what works best and often its not what i thought would work.
Again realy like what you've done.
Cheers

Sort those out in mono first before going to stereo.

Thanks!
Yes, I played all the instruments. I took the vocal stems and recorded new instrumentation.
I too noticed that I had to move instruments around again. I'm gonna try to move the banjo to the middle instead, see where that gets me.
I sorted everything out in mono, too, but I might be able to improve on ti a little.
