Now if MS would just make a 'non commercial, downloadable, $25' version of windows 7 ultimate available, I'd really happy.
Or 'open source' their OS, which might just be 1 minor version behind of their latest greatest ... would also a welcomed option!

try to see the big (or small) picture!
one of the best things about linux is it's great for ancient computers that are barely capable of running even a stripped down windows OS like DUXPSP3a0
as it happens, REAPER is also wonderfully optimized for such computers.
not every DAW has to be a quad core, blazing fast monster - there are plenty of uses for a dinosaur using REAPER as a mixer, basic audio processor, audio server, etc.
i tend to think of the possibilities for REAPER LINUX to be more small, sensible, utilitarian practices.

dude...yes. how much is windows7 anyway?
i have the erroneous view that i shouldn't have to pay for an operating system. i know it's incorrect but i won't let it go. i'll continue to use pirated windows XP and when i do move to 7 it will be on a license from my place of work. as far as i am concerned, i bought windows XP once when i purchased my first PC back in 2002 and i bought windows 7 when i bought this asus laptop last year...granted i immediately wiped it and installed XP (it didn't come with win7 on a disk)

Windows can not do low latency audio by itself very well and the MIDI system has not been revised since WfW 3.1. If you had been waiting on that Microsoft does something to improve low latency audio on Windows then you would have basically been screwed.
Hardware vendors are forced to write custom drivers (ASIO based, intellectual property of Steinberg) that work around the Windows audio system to get acceptable performance and vendors had to add technologies like LTB and AMT to their interfaces to get solid MIDI timing. There is the power. Windows' out of the box audio and MIDI capabilities are OK for office and gaming but they are crap for real time audio (but it's getting better with the latest versions).
Linux can do very low latencies even on consumer on-board cards out of the box since forever (no tweaking, no specialized drivers, no RT patches etc).

I honestly don't know the prices of Windows ... *grin*
XP + Intel has not been a good experience, however since Win 7 + AMD, I'm sold.
Hear you about the lower spec PC's though.

this is true and very cool.
what do you consider poor latency on windows? i ask because i do tons of performance sensitive midi triggering and i don't notice an issue...i play drums from my MPC (extremely low latency) and send the midi info from my performance out to Poise Drumsampler in Reaper under XP to provide extra layers...these extra layers do not sound at all latent compared to audio from the MPC.

Yeah WASAPI took too long to arrive and I trust your knowledge about the MIDI implementation; yes it should be updated!
Too many if's though for me to switch to Linux for Audio processing
- if I can find drivers for my audio card
- if Reaper will run succesfully
- if my favorite VST(i)'s will run/are available
- if Reason will work on Linux
- etc.
niche ... until the killer DAW (Reaper) + hardware support + the rest becomes a reality.

All of these are good reasons not to jump on linux as is. because most the ifs are nos now. So win/mac is the way.(although to be honest I love working in almost any Linux distro(mainly deb variants) But reaper doing this is a step in the right direction. A huge step. Hopefully 404,daveisadork,Jack W, cockos, and the rest of the crazy folks that have a hand in this, pull it off, because this opens the door for competition. competition leads to sound card manufacturers noticing, building drivers (yes JBM I know ) Reaper and wine run my vstis great so I don't see that as being an issue. Rewire with reason....I don't know.
The only thing I wonder about is how it is I plug in this 30 dollar behringer usb card and it works perfect. But if I throw on a 600 dollar motu card it doesn't recognize it. With all the folks at xorg pulling off amazing Linux drivers for video support, why cant anyone do this for audio. ( I wish I had more time to learn how to help ALSA and write them myself)

Not sure if this already exists, or if it's simple to accomplish, but I'd love to see a faceless ("no GUI") version of REAPER running on Linux. It would be awesome to create web services to process audio ("Clean up my podcast") and automated batch jobs for telephony servers running Asterisk and similar server side software.
Is this possible to to do currently?

I am a Linux noob but finding all these distros that are super responsive and fast makes me wishing that Reaper will be developed for Linux. I also hope sound card manufacturers will start making drivers for their products.
I am really looking forward to this!

May I ask a noob question ?
As I don't understand close to nothing about Linux, now what is exactly happening here ?
Ok, there's a Linux version on Lol, this part I got.
Will it be further developed by Cockos, or is it for other Linux devs to "play around" / develop it further ?
I see some people apperently doing already "something" with it. (there's a screenshot from a dev on the previous page)
Does that mean it's gone (partly) open source on Linux ?

if i understand things correctly, Linux port will be like OSX port - the swell libraries need to be ported to Linux, and then a few #ifdefs here and there in the main codebase and we're all set.

It means you will be able to run Reaper on Linux and waste endless hours dicking with the OS instead of making music. If you're into that sort of thing, DIVE IN!
Me... I'll stick with the only OS that matters much. Everything works right out of the box.
D
EDIT: It's great the Cockos guys are doing this though. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for drivers from the major interface manufacturers though. No money in it.

Hmm, I've never understood why some people feel such a strong need to derail every constructive thread with useless 'Linux is crap' BS as soon as the word Linux appears in front of their eyes. That hatred must be really deep.

Maybe that's right but I'm getting really angry as it's the same two persons every time who destroy every constructive discussion about this topic with their 'my OS is superior anyway'-BS.
This is really annoying.

Anything that brings the people who make this program profit and a measure of joy is good by me, since I want to see Reaper progress for years to come!
If linux fits into that, cool. My views about linux are well documented in other threads and need not be brought into this one

Linux is the future. Windows and OSX will be obsolete soon. Someone at Reaper realizes this, and so do people at Google. Its smart to respect UNIX. The oldest operating system and wouldnt you know that even the brand new Macintosh OSX is built based heavily on it.
Linux has taken a dramatic upswing thanks to companies like Google and Canonical. Its amazing how easy it is to install and use Ubuntu, and how nice it looks compared to just a short few years ago. Exponential growth is occurring in Linux right now as we speak. Mobile devices for one example. EX-PO-NENTIAL.
I used to work on Wall Street, and I pitched companies like SUN Micro back in the 90's, I would stand behind Linux absolutely, and with better Tenets.

no, i figure we are beyond fire. Bill and Steve should get out of the OS business and focus instead on expensive software and geeky aluminum gadgets that run and obey Unix. Free OS, expensive software could be a viable model. Reapers sales would double or triple if it only had to be developed for Linux. There is a ton of money in Linux by the way, and not as obsolete as the endless cycle of useless flash in the pan code that has to be constantly learned and deprecated in the windows/mac world. not a fire, not a troll. Linux wins in the end, spoiler alert.
The International space station and Space Mission Control runs on UNIX. So does Google. Would you trust mac or windows with your life? Not me.
So, cheers for those who are porting Reaper to Linux.

The destruction is: 2/3 of the thread are about 'my OS it better than yours' and 1/3 is about 'REAPER for Linux'. It always starts with a variant of this 'linux is crap for audio so why bother'-post by the same guy and you are chiming in every time with exactly the same BS. At this point every constructive discussion is over and we are talking only about preferred operating systems and not about the original topic.
I've seen this behavior numerous times now and it is getting very annoying and tiresome. So please stay out of a thread if you don't have to add something useful to a discussion.

I use both Windows and Linux. I like them both. I dual boot.
ATM My DAW machine is a Windows box due to audio drivers and my heavy reliance on VSTS. Back in 2006 I was running Linux with a RT Kernel + Jack + Ardour + Wine + Reaper --> VST --> Jack --> Ardour I actually had things going pretty smoothly, but then I got into Ableton Live, and that was pretty much a no go under Wine so I decided to switch to Windows for my audio needs.
This is really cool though, I'm happy that the Linux guys are getting a break with more and more software and support. As far as the drama is concerned, I know it's a two way street but in general the Linux guys take about 500 times more sh#% for using their favorite OS than the Windows guys do, most of the time just for mentioning the word Linux. Even though my primary OS is Windows I'm sticking up for the underdog and mentioning this as a reminder for those who seem to enjoy bashing Linux for one reason or another without provocation. Hopefully someday there can be harmony between the two camps. Although, if human nature is any indication..

Great - thank you!
In my opinion, making Reaper available on all three platforms can only be a GOOD THING. Thank you to all endeavouring to make this happen.
