Default Monitoring.

Hi Reapers.

Lets say that i would record vocal.. Then i have 2 options for monitoring. Reaper offers a monitor of the track input og my sound card offers it to..
If i choose the reaper monitor would, what i hear and sing be delayed by lets say 12 ms? ( asio latensy )
Or is monitoring direct from the soundcard the right way to monitor my vocal?
And then maybe use monitor on a reverb track for a more natual sound in my headphones?

By the way how high is your latensy?, what is normal and acceptibel?

Halløj

If you want to listen direct (pre AD/DA conversion) you need to do it on your sound card mixer. Then you get no latency.

I think 3-4 ms might be acceptable, but it also depends on the what instrument, how and who. You totally need to try for your self. 12 ms is way too much IMO.

Personally I never do anything but direct listening.

Direct is best if its possible.Definitely.

And put the reverb on a seperate track and listen to that through reaper like yousaid.Latency wont affect that too much.

In real world terms 12ms is how long the sound from a guitar cab would take to reach your ears if it was placed about 13 feet or so away from you.

Thanks for saying what I wanted to: I've been in gigs with (guessing) way waaaaay more latency (singer), I personally find my brain can compensate to a certain extent.... maybe I'm just crap though

I find myself never using the sound card's direct monitoring, because you want to do things to the signal while monitoring, like compression, EQ and reverb.
