 it would be a start at least if devs would make splitable and vertical dockers with an option to collapse

panning modes could be changed by double clicking on pan info next to the slider

Right click and "run as administrator" to work around that issue in Win7 and Vista. When installing in "portable" mode, the installer *should* pop up the UAC box ("do you want to allow this to make changes to your system?") but it doesn't seem to at the moment.

This probably qualifies as a bug

I'd like that. I think single clicking would work even better.

Something else that would be helpful: On the master fader, clicking the Output: Stereo button toggles between stereo and mono. I'd like to add other modes to that cycle, and here's how I'd like to do it:

1) Right click the output button. A menu pops up with options for the four mono modes. (This happens now.)

2) Ctrl click the options to select or deselect them. e.g I might want to hear Mono L-R. I ctrl click that and a checkmark is added.

3) Now I can click the output button to cycle through stereo, mono L+R, and mono L-R.
Makes sense, right?

I hope there is something walter can fix. The output button should have a separate indication for each of the mono modes. Right now, whether I'm hearing L+R, L-R, L only or R only, all the button says is "Mono". Hovering the mouse tells me the mode but that's too slow.

No. If installing in portable mode, the installer should NOT request UAC administrator privileges; that's part of the point of installing portably is that it is installed as the current user.

We will update the installer to default in portable mode to a more neutral path (i.e. D:\reaper) rather than program files.

Hey congratulations!

This looks Sofa King interesting that I can't afford to look at it atm. But it's a nice treat to be able to be in on this process. I think I'm going to skip the pre this time around and wait for the final (maybe watch from afar.)

The whatsnew4.txt was a good read.

Oh poor nicholas!

This portable install thing is a nice touch. If only every app was portable.

Default The GUI's just fine!

THE GUI, THE GUI, THE...!!!

At first, I was dissapointed. Then, I started working with it, and tinting tracks, and doing stuff, you know, draggin the send of a track to another, changing the track layouts... GREAT WORKFLOW for me!!! And you can understand almost anything at first glance. Except for maybe folders, in the TCP, but other than that, I find it to be a very FITTING Gui to say the least. I find it very CLEAN, everything more DEFINED. Like every element stands out while it's a part of a whole. Like you can find any element very fast, while no element stands out to distract you. U know what I mean?

Having said that, yeah, that mockup going around looks great, and if AND if only us can work as fluently as with the actual one, then, it's more than welcome!!!

I expected of course the BEST looking GUI on the planet, but what can you do? What's more important is I feel great working with/in it.

As I understand it, Administrator-type users normally run programs with the same privileges as standard users. To run program with extra privileges, they can right-click and select "Run as Administrator" as you did. Standard users can do that too, but then they have to find an Administrator-type use to type in his/her password.

Hm, I think that WALTER could do much real UI than everything else suggested by us (the users).

Brice's concept is allready implemented in the new Sonar X1 I think. Not exactly but is very simmilar.

Simply stunned by everything included in this upgrade. WOW!

Really don't understand all the criticism already expressed since I very much doubt that all of the people complaining do actually fully comprehend all of the extremely deep functionality introduced here. Relax, boys! This is the first alpha.

I respect everyones opinion, from my angle, Reaper3 Default theme is very nice to the eyes and I can work like hours and understand everything I do, this continues even better to the new approach, kinda like Ableton did with Live, which is made for use in live low light conditions and be easily accessed fast. Themes maybe for beauty but here we also need functionality and endurance throughout every full (and more) days job.

You can check the portable install on the installer window of v4 and everything will go to one directory (choose different than your v3) and your good to go!

I also loved those ideas in those screenshots.

The new theme is kinda strange, it sure needs some thinking to be done.

I firmly hope this GUI is gonna be replaced with something that's cleaner cut, and gosh get rid of that green already. Reaper should look more professional, and IMO, Brice's GUI mockup is the epitome of professionalism.
I work together with videos and animations so a gray dominant color would be great to adjust my eyes correctly and really write music for a red sunrise or a green forest :-)

ReaSurround has so much potential, we can use Reaper in Theaters and interactive installations with 3D speaker positioning and jump into scenes with locators easily according to the script or sequence we like to playback.

Its Superawesomealabamaliquidsnakes!!!

Brice's approach is great, it reminds me of how software should work ;-)

For sound designers and film sound professionals looks like the way to go, I would prefer a gray dominant color in order to keep our eyes properly adjusted when working for picture, try google for color grading or color correction to see how those guys are keeping their eyes properly adjusted throughout their pipeline.

I would say (its still early) that a solution for the GUI maybe hides in the middle, the famous mockups are a little crowded and not so professional regarding that, offer better window and dialog box customization and placement which is just great, a gray theme should be right for use with audio for picture and keep your eyes well adjusted and also the new GUI has cleaner faster approach on how to show things, maybe a little more than needed.

I also would like to see a bigger spacing on and between the group tracks in the arrange view because the way it is now I really cannot see much after some time in a big session.

I'm sure everything will be great and Brice can use Walter to make his magic flow ;-)

Great work guys this is great work Cockos people and congratulations to the Reaper community for the help, tools and suggestions.

We all doing great!

And on the end of the installer it could ask for your paypal account and return you the 10000 euros/dollars you spend for other sequencers the last 10 years :-)

That would be a killer feature ;-P

One thing I noticed is that I really have to set all my menus back to the new defaults in order to take advantage of the new settings, of course... this was difficult, however I guess I can take screenshots of the old ones...

The new GUI is obviously more complete "under the hood" and it seems like it's going to be fleshed out over the period of testing. After all, this IS a beta (an alpha, really). There are obviously some things which aren't as clear as they could be:

add folder track button - man those are small!
BPM indicator/changer - can't we drag and change that, please?
transport buttons - could be a little more 3d - seem to be in a different order than normal.
opening splash - neat animation, but maybe more "reaper" themed (darker?)
piano roll was a step back, but only in the ways that the colors and keys look too "win95" - however I realize this is probably going to change.
In some ways I miss my old theme, lforiginblack... but of course, I go to that and I miss all the goodness of the current one
So, I guess I am at the mercy of skin devs - however I really love where the new GUI is going. Great job guys!

Loving what's been done so far, agree with the GUI complaints, but the new features are amazing!

Been pretty stable for me, which is great, but I really really really really NEED true track freezing
