Default Forever Lost- Finally Done - What do you think of mix?

I have my latest song finally done. I am pretty happy with the overall sound and mix. But after listening to ones own songs SOOO many times it sometimes gets a little difficult keeping a fresh ear on things.
As always I would love and appreciate any outside opinions and advice. I am learning a lot from everyone here in the forums but will always have LOTS to learn.
On the harmony guitar lead the delay/echo is a little strong, but that is on purpose. Does that work good for the song or is it too much and needs to be backed off a little?

I can say that you're not forever lost in the mixing part. It has a sparky sound the highs, but the bass isn't that crisp and defined on a system with less low frequencies.

The mixing is overall good, but if you want some mixing advice, here it goes:

- drums sound like a drum machine, not real drums;
- vocal lacks high end;
- guitar solo has too much mid;
- I simply can't hear the bass.

Good song BTW.

What is the focus of this mix? Because I can't tell, I hear no bass, no transients, stereo image seems weird. I hear distortions and clicks. Too much bass in the room/verb, muddy. Drums are single loop it seems and booooring... Mix has no punch or power.

"I am pretty happy with the overall sound and mix."

What was your reference track? Doesn't sound like you were referencing anything.

Seems the mix fits the title of the track pretty well. Great song though!

Fun! Elaborate. A bit arty. That diminished fifth in the chorus was a bit distracting, took a while to get used to. But why not? Not something you hear every day.

Original stuff. The only name that popped up in my head was Todd Rundgren. Whom I haven't listened to much at all, so I may be totally wrong.

I think this song has potential.

You need a bit of verb on the explosion at the beginning.

The drums need more punch and variety.

The voice needs to come forward in the mix.

The whole mix is a bit muddy sounding but

I think this is a highly original song and if you sort out the technical side of things, its a good piece.

Nice effort.

Thanks everyone for listening.
I appreciate the good comments about the song and a really appreciate all the constructive criticism. I really want to learn and that is why I asked here in the forum for some good and honest opinions and ideas.

:-) And to be compared in ANY way, shape or form to Todd Rundgren :-) Thanks, that made my day.

I am eager to get back into this and see what I can do.

Wyn,

Had another listen today(I always listen a day later, just to make sure I wasn't talking crap the day before)

This is a very complex mix --- so many elements and lots of frequencies vying for the same space.

On reflection, I also think it is a wee bit leftcentric --- you could spread the stage a little to the right in parts.

I still think this is a terrific song, I really like it.

If you can get this right, you've got yourself a really nice production.

You need some serious mixing tricks to get everything to sit beautifully --- but I'm sure you can do it --- just needs time.

All the best

Default cool

"wrong chords"? wrong notes? What? Yer only sposed to play the white keys, not the black ones?

The contrast between the "correct" [or you might say Disneyesque and cliche'd]
melody of the vocal and the altered [or if you are stuck in pop you might say "evil"] scale found in the instrumentals is a cool and effective strategy.

In contrast to comments above, I could hear the bass line, and its companion on the lower midrange, the rhythm gtr.

The arrangement was inventive, moving around, pulling together a sonorous tapestry out of a wild variety of sources and ideas.

Thanks again. I really appreciate the nice comments.

I think I have made some good progress. I am not saying things couldn't still use more improvement but I honestly believe I am heading in the right direction from all your comments. If anyone has the time and patience I would appreciate any opinions on the reworked version.

In the first post I have a link for the current reworked version of the song. After doing this one and then relistening to the original I really see what everyone was talking about as far as really 'muddy' sounding.

I have not done anything with the drums as of yet. But I do have plans for better drum tracks. My brother is a pretty good drummer and is going to record some MIDI tracks for my music with his electronic set. Those will be totally revamped at a later time.

Wyn,

Had a listen today to the reworked version.

Really big improvement. The east-west balance is now better, the voice is clearer, the overall transparency improved.

Whatever you did, full marks mate. Excellent work.

PDK - Thank you. I really appreciate the nice comments.

And thanks again Sambo Rouge for giving another listen.
I am sure I can still improve on what I am doing so far. As much as any one else here in these forums, I absolutely love music and recording. DAW's such as Reaper make things SOOOO blasted easy once you figure out the tools and how to use them properly.
I am definitely learning but have a long way to go to be proficient at it as some of you here are.
I am truely thrilled at some of the great songs and excellent recording quality that I hear in the Reaper forum.

"Whatever I did"--- All I did was listen to some great advice from some excellent help!!

Thanks again everyone!!
