Default Disable FX Windows Having Own Menu System

One thing that's driving me a little nuts and also affect some shortcuts I'd like to use is the fact that (at least on OS X), when an FX chain window is focused, the upper menu of REAPER changes to another mode where it just says REAPER, FX, Edit, Options

This prevents me from even doing the simple task of saving the session using CMD + S because it brings up a dialogue to save the FX Chain.

It would be very nice if a user could disable FX Windows from having their own menu system which for me, just gets in the way of how I want to work and shortcuts.

Thanks for the consideration.

You can auto-float FX when they are loaded, which only shows them in their own window, instead of FX chain window...

Can you do this for plugins that are already inserted? The only settings I see for this are for newly inserted plugins.

Yes, double-click their name in the FX chain and they will float out. Or just right click the FX button on the track itself and pick the plugin in the chain from the list on the bottom.

Thanks, this is better but not quite what I'm looking for as it still blocks some shortcuts and I actually prefer the plugin chain window concept, I just wish that it didn't have to have it's own menu system that goofs up all your shortcuts, even the simplest one such as saving your session.

WaveLab for example has a similar plugin chain window concept but it doesn't get it's own menu system which to me is preferred. I just wish you could disable that menu system yet keep the chain window.

try placing the fx chain window in the dock somewhere.. embed it into the window and then you'll have your menus. then order to get to the other menu you have to right click the chain window.

Thanks, but docking the FX window is still more of a PITA than I'd prefer to deal with.

The ideal would be to have the floating FX chain window, but without having it's own menu system.

Hoping that a chance could be made to disable this.

Thanks for your efforts to find a solution though.

Yes, the way the current FX chain window blocks most shortcuts and other things is maddening.

I don't mind the window itself but I see no need for it to have it's own menu system when you can right click on it to see basically the same things.

I hope that the developers can see this and can at a minimum create a preferences to turn this special menu thing off.

Actually I like the menu. I think it should be integrated in the main menu -- it's common for the main menu to change depending on which window is in focus.

Even this would be better than the current setup. It's just such a slowdown when I have a plugin chain window open and then nearly all of my shortcuts no longer work.

I fail to see the logic behind this idea.

A simple FX section added to the main set of menu options really wouldn't take up much more space.

I'd still be curious to hear from the developers or somebody close to them about why the FX windows need their own menu system.

I'm really loving REAPER after using it daily for nearly two months but this one thing still drives me nuts and feels like it's constantly slowing me down or getting in the way.

I've tried doing this but it does work and I find the FX Chain window special menu to be annoying as ever.

I made this custom action:

-SWS/S&M Focus Main Window (only valid within custom actions)
-Save Project

Then I assigned a shortcut of CMD + S so that trying to save the project regardless of what is focused should just save as normal.

However, that still doesn't work.

I'd really like to hear form somebody involved with development on why the FX Chain window needs it's own menu system. REAPER is the only DAW I've seen that does this and to me, it just causes headaches.

I agree completely. Away with the alternating menu.

It would be nice to hear from the developers if they plan to ever make it optional to remove the alternate FX menu or just permanently fix it into the main menu.

After roughly 4 months of solid REAPER use, this is probably the biggest thing that still bugs me. Everything else is pretty great.

This is now possible the the 5.25pre versions (starting with pre2). While it's a nice improvement, it turns out there were a handful of FX Chain Window shortcuts that were useful.

I wish it was possible to get those shortcuts in the main REAPER menu shortcuts, or have a shortcut to toggle the new option on or off.

All in all, I still wonder why the FX Chain Window needs it's own menu system. Apple like WaveLab and Studio One have a great FX Chain Window for managing plugins inserted and it's own menu is not required so this issue doesn't exist.

Overall this is great and I use this mode nearly 100% of the time.

However, there are a few FX Chain Window shortcuts I sort of miss. I wonder if a few things could be added to the main REAPER shortcut/actions menu?
