Default Molot - The new best Fairchild for free ?

Hi Reaperians,

if i open a thread for a new freeware plugin, it must be very good, believe me. And so is "Molot". (And YES, i know Density MKII. Molot is different!) Not just because its damn close to my UAD Fairchild. Molot also offers a "Sigma" attack mode, where the sound realy reminds on Neve 33609. Next to this it has an ultra warming Sidechain Highpass, a mid-scoop EQ which solves Guitar problems and pushes snare mids very well, and a Limiter as a perfect round up. As an "initial release" its still AWESOME !!!

So get it here: http://vladgsound.wordpress.com/plugins/molot/

Its NOT CPU hungry! Just turn the default Oversampling from 4x to 2x or 1x. It does not realy make significant difference to my ears.

Get it and write your opinion !

I tried this the other day and it's great. It's really easy to over-do it, but the sounds are great.

Thank you for posting this, playing with it now. I rather like the GUI, kinda cool in my opinion. Now if I can just find the control that launches the missiles

Sounds really good!. Thanks for sharing this. Was looking for a free Fairchildish type comp. This one really sounds promising. Many thanks to the developer!!

It does, but make sure you're not on 4x oversampling when you're using it. I think that's where it starts as a default. Turning that down, or off, can really help.

Uses twice as much CPU than Density, but that mid-scoop is awesome. I got a really muddy distorted guitar track to fall right into place without any other EQ, just by using the mid-scoop. It has a nice clean sound to it. If the cpu gets too high, I figure render with effects to a new track will solve that.

Thank you very much! Problem solved. 2x oversampling gets you in the same range as density's CPU usage. Off, gets you really low on cpu usage.

Mmm, I'm liking this quite a lot. Getting some nice snap out of it. Seems very quick to be able to fine tune nice settings and get things cutting through with the sigma switch turned on. Tis great

Reminds me of something I might run across in S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadows of Chernobyl (a game for those that don't know) I do like the plugin though!

BUMPing this thread!

I just discovered the mid-scoop nob and WOW it really does help some tracks fall into place. It's like this: if you need room for the vocals, then bam, this will create some space; if your vocals are too harsh, bam, you have a dial to play around with while listening to the mix; heck if the entire mix seems a bit too harsh, bam, this dial will let you know real quick...

I don't know exactly why, but I can't seem to get the same impact when I cut that range with another EQ plugin? I need to do my homework to find out how this dial interacts with the compressor unit...

"If the compressor is being used in a right way then an even sounding is achieved for both front and backside elements without the first «jumping» forward and «disappearance» of the latter behind louder elements. The built-in mid-frequencies equalizer is based on mid-frequency range equal loudness curves design (see image 19) and can be used as another tool to position instruments, with ability to highlight backside elements or to add a bit density to frontal elements and move them back at the same time. Equalizer can be tuned by the control nob"

So, can you give us a simple method of how this is done? I am trying to make vocal space myself to make my tracking more dynamic, thanks, psingman

Just add this VST to the guitar and other instruments, use it as a compressor and then turn the MID-SCOOP dial towards the +12db side; you will immediately hear the "color" of this compressor as it makes the audio signal less harsh - mids more tame-, and this should, in theory, create more room for your vocals (i.e. clarity of the vocals is associated to freqs in the mids). It like EQ carving, but the compressor unit is doing it... You could use an multi-band dynamic EQ, but I like what Molot is doing.

I find that carving space for the vocals by working on the sound of the instruments in the song let you keep more dynamics in the vocals, because you don't need to squash them so much with compression to make them stand out in a busy mix (i.e. a mix where many instruments occupy the mid range of the frequency spectrum).

Start by putting the Molot on an instrument that is very midsy, then while the song is playing turn the MID-Scoop dial until you can hear the vocals a bit better. If the instrument sound becomes to thin, then you turned it too much. Then repeat this procedure on another midsy instrument, and so on. In the end, bit by bit, the vocal will pop out without even having to do anything additional to them (assuming you already compressed them to taste).

(grin) Good call exhuming this thread!
A great plugin that I don't use THAT often but when you need it, its ideal.

Surprisingly versatile.

A great plugin on paper but it almost never made it into a mix for me. The attack was always too grabby - turned a solid transient into a weak clicky substitute all too easily. I find the same problem with most software compressors. I quite liked it for subtle mix compression - it imparts a nice colour.

It's interesting to me that this thread popped back up again, because I started using Molot a lot again recently. I was using other compressors for a while, but I'm remembering how well it works on certain things, and it's getting a lot of use.

I've really liked this compressor.
Yet, the latency introduced caused me to ditch is as a goto.
