Default Automation is on and working but faders are not moving - why?

Something strange has happened in a project - I have lots of automation on different tracks (vol, pan etc) but the faders aren't moving. I can hear the automation is actually happening, but the faders aren't moving, and don't have the green highlighting - yet they are all enable and all in 'read' automation mode. Am i missing something?

You probably do know it anyway and actually you've written it, but obvious thing first, just in case...
You're aware that the faders only move in 'Read' mode but not in 'Trim/Read' mode ?

If so (which I assume), maybe post a small example project to verify if noone else comes up with another idea what's happening here.

Yup, it was worth you checking, but yes all tracks are definitely in Read mode (blue squares).

I'll post an example in a bit, if no-one else has any ideas...

I've had the same problem since I started using Reaper but have yet to figure out the solution so I'm interested as well!

Well that's strange, as I've never had this problem before, despite using Reaper automation for aeons. This is the first time it's happened to me, always worked fine before...

Could it be a ... *gulp*... BUG?

Ah no, call off the dogs! Got it. As I was preparing a demo project to upload, I realised that the envelopes in question did not have 'arm' checked in the automation window.

So I realise I didn't quite understand the function of 'arm' in this case... as the envelopes were still working but the movement was not visible.

Plus, I've had a brain blank out - I can't even remember whether I actually check these boxes normally when adding envelopes, as I do it so automatically!! Why did I not in this case?

Plus, further confusion, I've just added some envelopes to another track. Initially the arm button is not automatically ticked, but when I close and reopen the automation window, it IS ticked.

So in conclusion, it seems that 'arm' needs to be on, it is normally handled automatically, but why it was not in the case of these tracks I don't know. Furthermore, there might be a bug around the status of the 'arm' check box when adding an an envelope, until you reopen the automation window that is.

OK. Any thoughts?

If your volume envelope is not visible please check the preference :

"Display read automation from hidden envelope"

EDIT : I was answering to initial question ...

Awesome, Mudchild! That fixed it for me as well!!! Thanks SO much!!! I thought "arm" meant to arm the track for recording the envelope... doh!

personally i've never encountered a situation when the envelope should
be 'unarmed'. i have since removed the button from the theme and have
option "arm new envelopes" enabled in preferences - one less thing to
worry about.

That's a good idea! Becept I can't find "arm new envelopes" in my preferences...

And I'm curious about removing the button from the theme?

simply remove the part of the walter code of the theme you are using
that displays the arm envelope button

Thanks, Coach! Thanks, Eric! I don't know anything about Walter so I better leave that one alone.
