Default Half-Solo

Is there some kind of option to 'half solo', as in, make all tracks but 1 quieter?

I remember hearing about such an option, but can't find it in preferences or in the forum.

The point would be, I could hear 1 instrument more clearly, while still having some context within the mixfor EQing etc.

Solution,

Thanks, I tried that, but I'm not hearing any of the other tracks.

Are you sure you have enabled "Solo in front" on the main Options page ? It works fine here. Though only dropping the volume by 1dB isn't going to make anything noticeably quieter, I use more like 20dB.

Just to clarify, is this really a "re-named-by-Cockos" solo-in-place?

Huh? SIP and SIF are both implemented (and very different in what they do).

That's good to know, Schwa.
Never needed to use either & too lazy to look!

You have to admit, Reaper team does occasionally re-name stuff to something that is going to be counter-intuitive to old tape hounds like me.

Not wishing to grumble , but it would be nice to have a PFL too, especially for those using REAPER for live events or used to live workflows. Another function that would then be required is the ability to send the solo bus to a nominated output which can be separate to the master output.

Providing the actions/API were available, a mix engineer could then switch to PFL on cans without interrupting the main mix.

Options: Toggle solo PFL mode
Options: Toggle solo to nominated buss

Pardon my ignorance but what's a PFL ? I could work out the other TLAs cus we'd been talking about them (in English) but PFL just jumped in there out of nowhere.

That would be listening only to the track or tracks directly, at pre-fade level, whether the fader was up or down.

Useful in live or recording to listen to an input or track before fading it into the mix. Using PFL metering and listening to the sound makes for smoother mixing, esp in live situations.

On many live desks, PFL is the only solo you get -but it is important here to know what you're adding onto the main buss before it's there. For studio use only, it's not as important, but it should be an option in any properly-equipped DAW.

Like any engineering field, there are a lot of long-ish words and phrases. The Jargon gets shortened so that you might be left some time to mix...
