Try playing around with the result of Left mouse click on the current toolbar... and then choose Customize...

ah well toolbar blank is likey there and showing up as it should but when you go to choose that icon you most likely don't see any image... precisely because it is ..well, ... blank.

in the filter for the page where you select icons... [at the top] type the letters blank

you will likely get something showing below but again, you won't see much of an image if any... but it will let you select it more easily.

what did you use to modify it? Photoshop or something else? If you want to dbl check what you are doing... make another one, name it toolbar_test_01.png and make it all red or all green... put it in the same folder and see what you get.

ummm you misunderstood my point...

it is not to simply rename your file... it is to make another png file that is all red in color and name that toolbar_red.png and add that to the folder.

do you only have one install of reaper? or do you also have a portable install?

If you do a portable install, then all the reaper folders, including the Data\Toolbar Icons folder will be inside the location of that portable install.

That is a good way to test stuff....

There is no other step needed... I do this all the time.
Of course you have to make and save your .png file correctly.... there are a very few grapic apps that claim to be saving as "xxxx.png" and are actually saving in the jpeg format but with the .png filename extension.

If you want to test further you can go to the Stash and download some of my toolbar icon png files.... I know they work.

For what it's worth, I name all my icons with a "zz_" in front. For example:

zz_My_Icon

That way I know which icons are mine and exactly where they are when I want to select them.

well good steps so far... now let's ask this:

run reaper
find the menu under File [probably] to show Reaper's Resource path...

dbl check that you are putting the png's into the folder there that is \Data\toolbar_icons

if they are in there, for that install of reaper, they have to show up

^^ that's what I suspect as well. The InstallData folder in the program directory is most probably the wrong place. I think it's used for some rollback purposes. You want to put into
[Reaper's user data directory)/Data/toolbar_icons

The save way to find Reaper's user data directory is in Reaper's Options menu (not in File): "Show Reaper resource path in explorer/finder"

it is both a windows and a mac 'thing' if you do the normal install. Back in the days of XP, reaper used to install much as it does if you do a portable install. Since then it became that there are the app data, roaming, local, etc. folders and it puts many of its parts and pieces there.

I do have an install like that.. the 'normal' install, but only because of the rare times when I need to use rewire. The rewire dll will only install in that fashion. That install is all on C drive.

I also have a portable install on another HD. Into a created folder like so:

D:\Reaper Portable 64

That is the one I use 98% of the time. You can have both types of installs, no problem.

The reason I prefer the portable install is exactly because ALL the files and sub folders that reaper uses are inside D:\Reaper Portable 64.

So for the portable, I never need to locate the 'reaper resource path'... I know where it is... LoL.

If I make changes to themes, scripts, whatever in that install, I can, if desired easily copy whatever to the normal install locations.

I can also make simple back ups of that portable folder, ... I have a few on media discs and usb sticks...

Hi hopi, you have a SSD for your C:\Drive don't you.

That's what I have now and Reaper loads really fast, 1 second or less. I don't think I would want to put my portable install on anything but my SSD C:\Drive.

Here's a little LICEcap vid of loading Reaper.

Thanks to you hopi, I got the SSD and I'm lovin' it.

Hi Tod...

well yes and no... I have the SSD as C drive yes... and then SATA 7200 rpm HD for a few other drives. I have a portable reaper on D and another on E.

The D is the one I use most. E is for testing default stuff.
So yea, perhaps the SSD would be be faster but the portable on D launches in about 4-5 seconds.

At my age I'm not in such a terrible hurry... hahaha.

SSD's are wonderful and I hope to afford another one soon. Still the speed of reaper showing up must involve other things as well, eh? cpu, etc.

ummm ...can't really agree with that... I've had a few 10,000 raptors and don't really use them anymore... mainly cuz they are too small for me these days... but the SSD's I have used eat those raptors for breakfast... Plus just about zero heat, zero noise, etc. I'm looking toward a new 960 gb SSD in my future.... or, if I suddenly win the lottery, a few of them...

Hi sickamorz, I'm not sure what gave you that idea. All my drives have been 7200rpm for the last 10 to 15 years and work perfectly well for audio.

I do have a SSD now and I love it, but I only use that for my OS. My other 2 drives, a 2TB and 1TB are where I have all my Reaper projects, Samples, and audio files, and they're both 7200rpm.

what Tod said...

there was a time when the raptors were the way to go... then sata got better and [thankfully] I did not find a need for the raptors anymore.

ummm... I don't record a huge number of tracks all at the same time... so maybe I'm missing something I don't know about or don't need, but these drives work quite nicely for me.

I do other stuff than audio and need a lotta room...

anyway... maybe we've derailed this enuff and should go back to icons???
