More expensive than a fully modded Pre-73.
I'll pass, but I'm sure the USB will make it pretty interesting to some.

You think so? I'm sure you have the skill to build one but I know it's very time consuming. Specially when you want to make a clean, reliable wiring with a nice front panel. I have build many "lunch box" mic pre in the last 6 years and since it's often a single unit, sort of a prototype, there is a lot of thinking and labor to achieve one succesfully within the estimated time. That's cool when it's for your own studio, it's your time. For 1500$-2000$, you can find some pretty good mic-pre on the market I think.

I'm getting a Pre-73 MKII asap. I think they're out soon and I hear some pretty good things...

If someone here wanted me to build a 1073 clone and was able to supply the transformers, I'd build a few of them (depending how many transformers we obtained) and keep a couple for my own use. That would make it totally worthwhile spending time on.
1073's are not that complex really. Getting the transformers is the important bit. The rest is reasonably straight forward.
Here's the schematic...

You could just buy St. Ives and Carnhill transformers.
Google 1073 millions of schematics out there.

It looks like I might have to investigate this further if interest keeps up. I have the full schematic now and it seems the transformers are obtainable too.
Ideally, I'd like to see if I can get hold of a PCB template or even a source of already printed boards.
My build would probably look physically different to the original article but I'll aim to get as close as possible to the original physical component layout (hence my point about the PCB design) which is just as important for performance as using the original spec'd parts.
The pricing of the transformers will no doubt have a fair impact on how much it will cost to build these.

One more thing.... Government legislation in Australia over the last few years has made small scale manufacturing hideously expensive with their insistence on CE compliance and other testing 'requirements'.
Last time I checked, it was still OK to build prototypes and give them away. If that is the case still, you guys could be my beta testers and I could give you prototypes if you buy a copy of my new album for a few hundred dollars!!!

Yes.. Like I said St. Ives or Carnhill..
But I think the original Neve used St. Ives and Marinair.
I believe that's also what's in my Chandler LTD-1. But I have an early one. Serial #69

Also.. If you sell them..Make sure you make them Lead Free. RoHS!! (You may already do that where you are)
We sell plenty of our products overseas.. Europe made everyone switch to RoHS.
We were one of the early companies that adapted to it quickly.
Most all parts are RoHS now a days anyway.

Check out: Seventh Circle Audio
You can build them yourselves or have them built. I want one of these some day . . .

Yeah.. Supposed to be good.
I'm actually going the other way.. I already have neve tone and Chandler TG and Great River Clean..
I want to go.. Classic Audio VP26 500series.
It's a super easy build and really cheap.
And they sound like classic API..

Oh man! That is awesome!!!
If anyone is interested in purchasing these kits, I'm willing to negotiate a price to assemble them for you. I'll do it for less than the pre assembled price.
If enough people are interested, I'm happy to negotiate a REAPER forum group price.
For those considering this, I've been designing and building electronics now for more than 25 years so kit assembly to a high quality standard is easy for me.

I live just down the street from St Ives windings/Granta Windings and used to do a lot of bussiness with them for custom toroidal mains transfos.
The same guys are there, pretty much, although Carnhill bought them out.
It`s worth commenting that when Neve were in nearby Royston and Harston, that is where they got the originals.
Sadly I cant get stuff wholesale now and in fact the chap that deals with all those old audio transformers is based at Carnhill`s main facility in (I think ) Manchester.
Let me know if any of you colonials need any further information or contact numbers.

Man, I sure wish I could take you up on your offer, Dannii. That's very kind of you! Sadly, I do not currently have the funds available
I'll keep you in mind, though I'd like to eventually be able to put my own kit together, but I think I need a pre-assembled one as a template. I've done basic soldering before but never on a circuit board.

It's very easy a monkey can do it..
Start small like a pedal kit or something.
Then work up a little.
I know from looking at the Vp26 kit and a buddy of mine built one.. The parts in that would take me maybe an hour to build. Maybe even quicker on the 2nd build. Our Tone Press pedals have more components then those minus the Xfrms of course.

Obi, if we can get a few people together who'd be interested, the cost of postage could be shared and everyone could save a few dollars on the initial shipping from the supplier to me. I could then build a few of them at once and then ship them out to you guys completed.
I have to admit, I'm inspired by the group buy concept you guys have done now a few times. I took advantage of that when I purchased SampleTank. Now it is time for me to return the favour!! All we need are a few people who are keen and we can get this happening!

Awesome, Dannii!
I'd be in for a D11 certainly and maybe an N72 (depending on when our collective deal would actually proceed).

Cool
Looks like you and Obi are interested at this point. Perhaps it might be an idea if I made a new topic with a list of people who are interested. I can then update it as more people show interest and we can get the ball rolling.
