Default Cannot import .m4a file (SOLVED)

I had to import .m4a files that were created in Garage Band (on iPad). The file is imported without an error, but the resulting media item is empty (and silent).

I had to convert the files to another format to import them in Reaper.

Using v.5.28/x64. Tested on Windows 7 and 10.

On the "About" page, M4A isn't listed as a readable file format.

One workaround you can try would be to copy the file (leaving the original intact), and then renaming the file extension from m4a to mp4.

Also, see if this works:

Another possibility is the Reaper ffmpeg codec (64-bit). You'll need to install the codec in the Reaper program folder.

No luck with renaming to mp4.

FFmpeg did the trick.

I watched a video where someone showed that changing the filetype to m4v made importing possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPkYdPpalUI

This method doesn't work. Same import error as m4a. Just a heads-up if anyone else is searching through and finds this thread.

EDIT: It looks like I'm having trouble because Reaper isn't grabbing the codecs from VLC like it's supposed to. Otherwise, this method should work/is working for other people.

I'm encountering the same problem. I've verified that I can open the files in VLC. Is there a simple resolution for this that doesn't require naming the files?
