Upgrading from 10.6.8 to 10.7 on a 2008 white Mackbook?
I was thinking of making the above upgrade, but wondered what differences I would notice in performance etc., particularly as I'm running a less-than-modern Macbook. Would the new features of 10.7 give me a noticeable performance hit? Would I be likely to encounter software incompatibilities (I know you don't know what I have installed yet, but generally...)? Is it worth the bother or should I sit tight for now?

You need to find out (by model number) if that is an early 2008 or late 2008 model.
That is the dividing line for support on later OSX versions.

I must be early 2008 then, I was knocked back both times I tried, but it’s been a great machine, I can’t complain.

10.7, 10.8, & 10.9 will run on gen3 machines or newer. (Gen3 was late 2007)
10.7 will also run on the gen2 machines.

Well it's Core 2 Duo instead of Core Duo, seems that it will run Lion, but not Mountain Lion. Given this, is it worth it...?

A Gen2 C2D then? Sounds like it.
Worth it?
If you have apps you want to use that require at least 10.7 or new OSX features beckoning you then yes.

Yup, I do have some reasons to upgrade - I was wondering though if anyone had any experience of this particular transition. I'm keen to know whether there will be any performance hit in terms of CPU/RAM on Lion compared to SL?

The only real improvement you'll notice is if you use icloud. if you do then you'll want 10.7 to keep that functionality synced with your other devices. Other than that 10.6.8 is pretty stable and efficient.
I have the same computer you do and it works as well today as the day I bought it. I think it was on 10.5 when I bought it and it now lives happily on 10.7.
My Mac Pro is a 2.1 and is EOL'd on 10.7 but works terrific and stable so I'm good.
