Default better peformance with asio4all?

Hey people!

I use a esi juli@ soundcard on win xp 32.
I get nasty crackling when cpu gets near 50% with native ASIO driver of the juli@. I tried everything (BIOS settings, reaper buffer setting, gpu drivers, esi drivers, and so on...) but nothing helps..
If i use the ASIO4all driver with the same buffer settings i can get to nearly 100% cpu without any crackling. How is this possible??

Same here. I'm using a Line6 Toneport GX. Win XP 32bit.
Line6 Toneport GX ASIO:
Default buffer size 128 (lowest possible is 128)
Tone direct & USB Audio streaming: Buffer size extra small (lowest setting)
result: 44.1kHz 24bit WAV: 2/2ch 128 spls ~5.1/10ms ASIO

ASIO4ALL:
ASIO Buffer size 64 samples
result: 44.1kHz 24bit WAV: 2/2ch 64 spls ~2.1/2.1ms ASIO

In some projects i got crackles with the proprietary Line6 driver even with higher buffer sizes and higher latencies. (Actual version of the driver)
With ASIO4ALL the same projects run without any crackles at the lowest settings (2.1ms)

I'm also interested to know how this is possible.

I'm using a Line6 Toneport GX, too.

Same settings for the driver as you and i have also crackles (on a highly audio optimized winxp machine).

After some roundtrip latency measurements my asio4all settings are:

Asio Buffer Size = 128 Samples

In: 128 Samples
Out: 208 Samples

result: 44.1kHz 24bit WAV: 2/2ch 128 spls ~5.8/7.6ms ASIO

Compared to the Line6 settings i reduced the overall latency and i'm only about 2 samples off with these settings. No crackles. I can live with that.

I just read a thread on gearslutz where a user had the same question.
In his last post he claims that the asio4all driver works in 16 bit..
He measured it with stillwell bitter.
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music...res-catch.html

I did the same, but for me everything is 24bit.
I also get lower latency with asio4all.

Is it too good to be true?

Hmmm, I use a L6 KB37 with their driver and have had problems with number of tracks/plug-ins I can use. I bought a new laptop, well it's been maybe 2 years now, I5, 8Gb RAM, No internet, only used for music, made some of the normally suggested tweaks but not anything too agressive and it still doesn't run as stable as I want it. I guess I'll try ASIO4all and see if there's a difference.

Please report back on how things are going for you guys!!

I cannot really tell why asio4all works better than the toneport driver.
Maybe toneport gx sucks ? (As the hardware does. ...have to buy a new interface when i've got the money...) Though i always used the latest drivers.

Similar thing here with Lexicon Lambda USB interface. ASIO4ALL gives me much better performance (lower buffer, less jitter) than the native ASIO drivers.

I have always assumed that this is so because the native drives are badly coded, while ASIO4ALL is much better written. What else could it be...?
