Default Reaper and Amplitube - Muffled distortion?

Hi everyone.
I've had this issue for a while now and have been using Cubase to get around it when necessary but I much prefer using Reaper so I'd love to get it sorted.

Using Amplitube 3 inside Reaper as a VST plugin I notice, (especially on distortion) that the sound is muffled and loses it's shine.
However, if I use the standalone Amplitube or use the same VST inside Cubase it is much brighter and more how I expect it to sound.

I never used to have this problem with Reaper but after a format and re-install this problem came up and I can't see a solution.

There is nothing else on the tracks apart from Amplitube itself and all the levels are similar.
I have attached samples so you can hear what I'm on about.
Not a nice distortion by any means but it makes it easy to hear the difference.
Both of these are using the exact same presets inside Amplitube too.

Any help appreciated.

Sounds kind of odd. Are you using your quality at hi?

You mean my mixdown/render quality or a setting inside Amplitube/Reaper itself?

Thanks for the reply ObiK

If audio is working in reaper at all with other plug ins then lets focus on just AmpliTube. There should be a Quality button with three options. Make sure it is on Highest quality setting. And no problem. Thats why I'm here with IK Multimedia. Just here to help out!

Default Solved...

Cheers ObiK,

I sorted it out last night actually.
Bit of a brute force and not a clue what actual setting caused it but dumping the Reaper preferences .ini sorted it out, so it was definitely a setting within Reaper itself and not the Amplitube plugin.

Hopefully it won't re-occur.

Help appreciated nonetheless.
Cheers

footnote... yes there was quite a bad difference in your two samples... however in just looking at the properties for the two mp3 files, I can see strange differences... just using the windows file properties\audio properties

you can see a little diff even at the file sizes... but ummm the reaper mp3 says it's at 258kbs by lame and cubase says its 256 kbs by [FH?](guess)... is that fraunhoffer codec?

anyway... personally like to compare wav files, not compressed files...

so out of curiosity, what settings were wrong in reaper?

I know this thread is long dead, but I am having this exact problem and it doesn't look like any actual solution was posted. I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks

Did you check if the Quality button was on the highest setting as recommended by Obik.

The OP deleted an ini file, I presume reaper.ini -rename it to something like reaper.ini.old and see if it sorts the issue out.

Thanks for the responses. Yes to the quality setting. I can't find the reaper.ini file. I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.5 by the way.

For now, turning the input all the way up in Amplitube does the trick pretty well.
