Default Horrible Distorted Playback

Hi,

I am sure this topic has been covered before but I am struggling to find an answer.

I have been using Repaer for a few weeks now with a focusrite 2i2 and had no problems but today I have tried tracking a bass guitar and a guitar through a zoom acoustic effects pedal direct into the Focusrite. All sounds great through the headphones and the recorded wave looks ok but when I play back, the tracks sound dreadful - tinny and distorted and not at all like that being monitored. I have selected the input as normal and I am not using any effects on the track.

Can anyone think of a solution? It is very frustrating.

I assume the clipping indicators on the interface are not coming on?

What are your peak levels after mixing? Mixing is done by summation, and although REAPER uses floating point and it won't clip, "regular" WAV files are integer files and they will clip if you try to go over 0dB.

Your digital-to-analog converter is also hard-limited to 0dB.

I'm not familiar with the Zoom box, but my guess would be that it's for use between an instrument and an amp, so it's output(s) are probably not 'line level. On the one hand, the interface may need to be set to HiZ input for this approach to give results(?), but for me, if you're not using it for any effects, I would just plug the instruments directly into the interface (set at HiZ) and record them straight in.

Default found the solution

Thanks for the replies.

It seems that the answer was more simple than I thought. A reboot of everything fixed the problem
