Default Bass track sometimes one line sometimes 4 lines (See image)

I'm confused why the bass track comes out on one line sometimes and 4 lines other times. See the two circled items in detachment. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

In case you havent already, look up and you will see the Resources tab, which is where you can download the free user guide and some of the best video tutorials for Reaper out there.
Then check out the takes system, which is what is causing your multiple *takes* (as labelled in your Reaper screenshot)

The good news is that you can choose how this stuff gets displayed.
Oh and the traditional bit of advice to Reaper new users: right click everything!

Good luck.

The track with "four lines", you've recorded four takes.
Easiest advice this early in the day is to download the user manual and find the chapter about 'takes' and recording tracks.

As the others already mentioned, this is an Item containing 4 Takes (also indicated by 'Take 1/4:' in the Item name - which means you have currently Take #1 of 4 selected).

In addition to chapter 8 'Arranging, Comping and Editing Takes' in the User Guide, have a look at this: http://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#ilX2FOyu_Ts

I have always found REAPER's take lanes confusing, I always exploded them to new tracks to see them clearly. After a few of those recordings, I just started inserting a new track for each take (easy to do with one custom action keystroke that inserts, arms, mutes the prior track).

This also gives multiple extra input fx options> you can have unlimited tracks apparently =x amount of input fx on each channel if comp can handle it.<All set to record same time.
Then decide on which take-or comp/blend all the takes together as 1!! =)
