Default Multitracking drums

I have a couple of drum vst modules that when opened lay out 8 tracks. It appears they are assigning:
Track 1 - Output 1/2
Track 2 - Output 3/4
Track 3 - Output 4/5

When I try to lay midi into the drum track for track 2, Im not able to hear anything coming from that track. I can only hear the drums for the first track.

Since I only have the left and right outputs on my audio card hooked up is there a setting I can use to assign all these 8 tracks to the main output or is there something else going on that I'm missing?

Am i correct to assume that the drum module is laying out 8 different tracks so the kicks, snare, HH can be put on their own track for mixing and effects?

Is there a preference that I can set to always assign the drum tracks to output to the master left and right.

are you talking outputs or track channels? also, any midi that's not recorded on the vsti's track should be routed to the vsti track. grab a piece of paper and work out the routing.

dsf1,
can you let us have more details:
-- which drum module?
-- how do you get the 8 tracks?
-- are those 8 tracks in the drum module, or in Reaper?
-- are those outputs in the drum module, or in Reaper?
-- can you post your project file here as an attachment (in a ZIP file) so we can see what you have set up?

From what you have said the MIDI on track 2 is creating sounds on track 1. Here's my guess:
-- is that MIDI being sent on channel 1?
-- you can change those MIDI notes to channel 2 in the MIDI Editor: double-click the MISI clip to open the Editor, Ctrl+A to select all the notes, right-click, select Note channel >> channel 2,
-- or you can change the Send from that track to the drum module (if it is an FX on another track): click the [io] button, find the Send, change the MIDI frouting from "All" => "All" to "All" => "2"

If you can, get hold of a copy of the Computer Music Beginner's Guide Special #32 - it's full of tutorials for beginners, using Reaper.

This site will ship it internationally: http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk

I will checkout the guide which will be a big help I'm sure.

At the moment Im playing around with Stylus RMX and Idrum.

When I load those VST's I get the following prompt:

"Reaper will build the following tracks for this effect:
Stereo 1/2-> New Track 5 "StylusRMX 1"
Stereo 3/4-> New Track 6 "Stylus RMX 2"
Stereo 5/6-> New Track 7 "Stylus RMX 3"
Stereo 7/8->..............

Once I click on "OK" I'm left with 8 new tracks in reaper.

I select a kick drum and place the midi data into the first track that stylus created. The kick sound appears in the master Stylus track and all is good. It appears that there is a master track created for the drums along with the 8 individual tracks.

I then select a hi hat sound and copy the midi into the "StylusRMX 2" track. This is the part where I don't have any audio sounding.

The same setup happens for Idrum. It created several different tracks but I'm only able to hear audio in track one and none of the seperate tracks that were created for this VST.

I would imagine the module is creating 8 tracks for all the different drums sounds, but I'm only able to play with track 1.

Any suggestions on how to get the other tracks to play?

Also, are there any video tutorials available that walk through Reaper that might be helpful?

Thanks!

The first track created is for the VSTi. The other created tracks are only for the audio outputs from the VSTi. Any MIDI placed on them does not go to the VSTi. You could put the MIDi on the VSTi track (or create other tracks for the MIDI and Send them to the VSTi track).

Here is a screenshot for DK+ Virtual Drums; I have drawn in the automatic audio routing. To make use of it I open DK+ and change the routing of its different drum sounds to its outputs (which are automatically mapped to the Reaper track's channels).

Big pic:

You can see sounds playing on three of the DK+ outputs.

There are several sections in routing a multi-timbral VSTi:
-- the individual instrument to one of the VSTi's outputs
-- the VSTi's outputs to the Reaper track channels
-- the Reaper track channels to the other Reaper tracks

This thread should also help you out with some other approaches:
