Default Tempo changes and non-rythmic sections

I have a song with two non-rhythmic sections interspersed between sections with a definite tempo.

Question: Is there a way to set a tempo and a click track and then have it stop for a while for a free section and then come back on, stop again, etc.?

Thanks for your help!

Stuart

Well you can make your sections including an arbitrary tempo for your free sections... And use the insert click source action...

Thanks! I realized after posting that the free sections really do have a set tempo, just a lot slower.

So, I have figured out how to set tempo changes at various points in my timeline. Yay!

BUT, I have some issues with the metronome.

1) I have the time signature set to 4/4 and metronome is only playing the first beat of the measure. I want it play at least 8th notes and quite possibly 1/16 notes. How can I keep the song in 4/4 but have the metronome subdividing the beats into 1/8 or 1/16 notes?

2) There doesn't seem to be any difference in the sound of the first beat and subsequent beats no matter what frequency I set them at.

I've checked the manual and simply can't figure this out. Thanks for any and all help!

I find it's often better to make my own click track with midi.

I'm all acoustic and not using midi.

Sure, but if you're setting tempi in Reaper, and having problems with the built-in metronome, then I find it easier to loop midi for click.

It also means you can freely choose the beat values and accents, as well as the sound of your click. I much prefer sidestick to computer bleeps.

1)
You could set the time signature to 8/8 or 16/16 for that section/marker.

2)
Hmm.. and you're setting them at different frequencies?

Thanks, Tim,

If I set the time signature to 4/4 in the project settings and then enter "1/8" in the transport bar next to the BPM, that would give me eighth notes. I think that works OK for me.

Regarding #2, yes, not matter what frequencies I enter there is no difference between the first and secondary beats. Weird.

Well it makes sense if you're using 1/8 bars - in which there is only one beat!

Using 8/8 should give you the different sound on first beat, behaving like 4/4 with eights.
