Default Cover - Ain't no Sunshine

Hi all, its been a long time since i've posted any songs, haven't really had anything of my own, always seem to be doing other peoples stuff.

This is one of a few tunes a mate of mine wanted to do for his family
in Canada and he is cool with me posting it.

We did this over the last two thursday nights, its pretty sloppy playing here and there but it had to be done quick so it is what it is.

Its very sparse, just vocals, accoustic guitar, bass, drums and a shaker all recorded here in my shed/studio.

Please have a listen and let me know anything mix wise that needs fixing, i already know some of the playing needs fixing but thats not going to happen no time.

Updated Mix.

Hi Wolffman, I think this is pretty good. The performance is great, both with the guitar and the vocal.

It's really raw and if that's what you want to preserve, then at least it could be mixed better. The vocal is great but the guitar is kind of covering it up.

I actually think the performance is good enough that it deserves some better mixing and mastering.

Thanks Tod, appreciate you taking the time to listen and share your thoughts.

Would you mind being a little more specific with the mix problems your hearing, i'd like to get a s much as possible out of what i have to work with, so i'm all ears so to speak

I was actually thinking the bass has too much weight and was making things a bit muddy, but you've suggested it might be the guitar, is that just a level thing or more frequency related do you think ?

Any suggestions you have would be very well recieved.

Cheers

Hi Wolffman, When I listened to it yesterday, my first thought is that it was really raw, and unproduced, which is fine, some people prefer that, and there really is a redeeming quality in doing that.

My 2nd thought was that the vocal seemed pretty buried to me and that, rather stuck with me throughout the song.

My third thought was that the performance was really good, the vocal and guitar especially, but I also thought everything else, the drums and the bass fit real nice too. I only listened on my little computer speakers, but they're not too bad, they have a pretty good sound, I don't think I would ever want to mix on them though.

My final thought was that it would be nice to hear it produced a little more, primarily with some good verb. Heh heh, maybe a little string arrangement in the background or, maybe some keys, kind of a rhodesy sound.

At the same time though, I do like the rawness of it.

I did a little googleing to see who originally did this song and found this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xzDhLvhgQw

In all honesty I can't say I like that any better than what you did.

I've tried to fix this in the updated mix, i only hope i haven't overdone it ?.
Getting the vocal to sit just right is never easy when your the person singing the song .

I played around with the reverb, added a plate alongside the hall i had on originally. I'm always wary of reverb as its real easy to over do it.
I don't have the time to do any strings atm but your right, it would really lift the song if they were done right, maybe when i have more time

Thanks, thats a really encouraging complement.

I've uploaded a new mix, please have a listen if you have time and let me know if its sounding any better or worse to your ears.

Thanks again!

For sure, an upright would be perfect, but, unfortunatly i don't own one and have only ever played one a couple of times and i must say it was like i had know idea how to play bass at all
They are a completely different beast to playing electric bass.

Cheers

Well.... I would do it for transport and digs/meals/booze (grin)

I do actually have family I could stay with in Warrnambool..... wonder how many 100s of miles even that is from you.

No steam bass players in your neck of the woods, then?

Shame.

Warrnambool hey, lets see ( goes to google maps ) Hmm........ only 2168 Km away
about 22.5 hrs drive, so thats just a day each way.
I think we should organize it then, so, when can you get here

Seriously though, i could get someone i know to play double bass or even borrow a friends and work it up myself but there just isn't enough time, my friend i'm doing this project for is leaving for Canada in a couple of weeks
so that means we have to finish two more songs in that time and we only have two more nights available to record and i'll have to get the mixes finished asap so he can get organized to leave.

These things always seem to sneak up on you and the presure is on but ya gotta love it !!

Did you get a listen to the new mix ?

Cheers

Yes, it's quite subtle but noticeably a little more out there.

You sang the vocal, so who played the guitar, that was well done to?

Heh heh, well you had to learn how to sing and play guitar like that, so you gotta love it.

Also it's great to have a friend you can consort with to do things like this.

I listened to the updated mix and enjoyed it very much. It sounds clear and well balanced as far as recording quality, mix levels and EQ balance. I like your vocal. The bass gtr sounds especially great on this in its lines and tone. There are moments where I'd swear it was Leland Sklar playing the bass. The acoustic guitar sounds good and glues the arrangement together. During the intro it's ahead of the downbeat on the third bar. Worth a quick edit as the guitar is so naked there. The acoustic guitar solo was nicely done.

Thanks Tim, very encouraging feed back, i really appreciate it.

If you don't mind could you give me a 0:00 time where your hearing the timing problem. i've had a quick look against the time line and can't find a spot where i'm ahead of the beat, i am slightly behind a couple of times though , i'm thinking it might be a hats/guitar thing.

I had to go find out who Leland Sklar was, i had heard of him before but couldn't associate him with a band. As it turns out he is mostly a session player with over 2000 album/song credits to his name.
Thats the best compliment i've ever had re: my bass playing so, THANKYOU sir

Glad you enjoyed the song.

Cheers

Thanks Timothy, i checked it out and its actually the closest to the beat
but actually still a little behind .
I fixed it up though ( i actually moved it further behind the beat) to make more like the rest and it does sound more consistent now.

Thanks mate.

Cheers
