Default Insert "start" measure marker?

I have a beat that I'm chopping up @ 104 bpm. Lovely. Got it aligned to the grid and all that. The issue is, there's a an 8th pre-note to the beat beginning on the 1. Did I say that right?

Imagine a drummer counting off with 4 clicks of the sticks, but the count off in your head sounds like "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and". The band would actually come in on that last and, an 8th note pre to the actual "1".

Check the image. What I'm hoping to do, mainly for visual purposes, is insert a marker at the green 1 to have the grid count on from there. Am I making any sense? I hope I conveyed this right. Basically the audio start on Reapers grid at one, but the actual groove start at Reapers 2. I'm trying to see if there's an insert "start" measure marker to make the grid count of from where I want. Don't know if it exists. If not, I'll do a FR. Thanks Reaper land!

Move everything to bar 2 and adjust the meter of measure 1

not sure if I get it, but IF I do

go to the project settings and make the ruler start from at least -1 measure [bar]... that will give you some room to see better...

then also make the 1 count on the ruler start where you want it to be... you can put yer edit cursor there and tell it to just grab that as the 1

try it until you get your ruler view as you want it.

This is close, and I appreciate the insight. This does exactly what I want but for time. The time in the ruler is successfully changed to 0:00 where I want it. What I'm trying to do, though, is have the bars / measures begin there. What would be ideal is entering a number besides -1 like you mention. Seems like you could only enter whole numbers. I need to enter, if it could be done, a "negative 8th note" which would be -0.5. However, it doesn't accept that entry.

In conclusion: I need file > project settings > project start measure to accept decimal values.

I think you can add some tempo signature markers with the options "Start new measure" and "Allow a partial measure before this marker" and then play with the project start measure.

I must be missing something...

I read that you want a marker to be at 1/8 note before the 1 or the zero... however you choose to count on the ruler,...yes?

so set it all up with a few minus measures [at least one]...set your grid to 1/8 notes and put your maker as desired.

then you can use a go to marker action to begin play from that point.

OK so what am I missing?

In the picture above, the red numbers are what Reaper shows as bar 1, bar 2, bar 3. I want that to start where the green numbers are, which is an 8th note in.

OK so you say that is an 1/8 note to the left of the item start... and IF I get it now, you want the ruler to start counting measures AFTER that 1/8 note..

so... I guess I'd set a minus bar
then so I can see it ez... put a normal marker at 1/8 note grid before [to the left of the 1 on the ruler] and move all my items to that marker...

it's called a "pick-up measure" - sometimes "pick up note" (FOR JUST ONE NOTE)

you can't have it start in a partial measure without some fudgery. Just have it be a measure. I think it's always a good idea to start at a negative measure anyways, you want some elbow room.

just do this... you'll need to push everything over by 7 8th notes. I don't think the "insert empty space" is in the default timeline menu, you might have to dig through the action menu.

Using "insert empty space" here - you ripple everything over, markers, time signature markers, regions, etc..... no need to futz with trying to move hell and highwater, just move the whole mess with this one action.

after you do that, just put the edit cursor on the 1, and change the project properties.

"use cursor"

- this is tricky wording here, it basically subtracts the cursor position from the current start position.

if you already have this at some non-zero number and want the edit cursor to be "0", you first have to set the text box to 0 before you hit the "use cursor" button.
