Default context specific keyboard and mouse actions

i think it would be great if we could assign one shortcut to several different actions by defining context specific behaviour... it would radically transform the way REAPER handles shortcuts, and possibly improve learning curve.

it would also make REAPER stand out not just from other audio software, but from pretty much every application available. plus you'd have fewer keys to remember (!)

how you'd do it - in the current methodology you have a trigger (e.g. Ctrl-C) and a related action ("Copy selection"). add a "context" list and you could link the shortcut to different actions - for instance:

TRIGGER - Ctrl-C
CONTEXT - Item / event / note selected
ACTION - Copy selection

CONTEXT - Track selected
ACTION - Copy entire track

CONTEXT - FX chain window
ACTION - Copy FX chain as track template

etc... i'd expect the "context" list to be much shorter than the "actions" list, and handle things like the examples above, and also:

Focus on TCP window
Focus on Mixer
Focus Transport
Drag mixer fader
Move item
etc. etc.

the other benefit of linking context into the action is that you'd be better able to customise mouse behaviour - so your list of triggers would be able to include things like "Left click-drag", "Right double-click", etc.

imagine the possibilities! i'm excited, anyway.

Default thumbs up for integrating key.shortcuts + contexts

day 2 of reaper school, watching and reading... and configuring.

Unless I'm mistaken, there's already some contextual behaviour associated with events (clicking things, +/- modifiers like shift).

I don't know if this extends to the 'mode' a user is in (recording... editing...)

I'm also wondering how much of this can be achieved with AHK or even extensions (or a clever combination of the two).

Obviously I need more info before this can develop, but love the idea.

A workaround (I've yet to create ANY toolbars, templates etc...) IN THEORY that would work (but I'm not sure if a HACK of this nature is even possible... doubt it)

Menu 1 has shortcuts like [alt] File, Edit, View, Track

IF Menu 1 can be toggled (visibility)
AND
keyboard 'event handling' is only actively handling shortcuts to visible menus...

so I could toggle menu 1 and menu 2, resolving conflict when wanting to use most intuitive key (T! S!)

This could yield further rewards in the realm of rationalizing keyboard shortcuts...

There already exist several shortcut contexts but I agree, there could be much more order and logic in the system. Windows and shortcuts behavior in Reaper doesn't feel right to me.
