Telling 32-bit and 64-bit VST plugins apart
On Windows, while using file manager for example, and seeing a VST .dll file in a folder, is there a way of telling whether it's a 32-bit or a 64-bit plug-in?
Something in the properties, perhaps?
Otherwise, what would be a method of telling if it's 32-bit or 64-bit?
Opening it REAPER? Then... looking where?
Thanks!

Most (not all) 64 bit VSTs will have 'x64' in their name, for example 'comp_x64.dll' and the 32 bit version of the same VST would be 'comp.dll'.
If you can't tell for sure that way (or by checking the 'Properties")... open 32 bit Reaper, then open the VST, if the 'bridge' opens a second window with the VST it is 64 bit.
I combat this problem by creating two custom folders "C:\VST 32 bit" and "C:\VST 64 bit" and then be sure to install all VSTs in the proper folder.
Then be sure Reaper knows the path to these folders.

There's a free utility called Dependency Walker for programmers, system admins etc.
But it can easily be used for your purpose.
Just run depends.exe
the program window pops up
File -> open
Select your file and you will see this e.g. here for ELASTIQUE.DLL:
(the coloring is by me for better understanding)

Thanks so much MichaJo!
depends.exe is _exactly_ what I was looking for.

Thank bluzkat.
Alas, this must have been in the early days of 64 bits.
I've just installed NI KOMPLETE 8 and all their 64 bit dlls have _exactly_ the same names as their 32 bit counterpart.

If you're running 64-bit Reaper, then 32-bit plugins will always open in a separate floating window by default.

is there a way to change it though? I use 64bit Reaper in full screen mode and with jbridge it opens up the plugin as a separate task and I can't see it sometimes because I'm in full screen. Also that way when the plugin window is ocused the taskbar appears oveer reaper and also hitting space doesnt play the project
if that'd be possible to change I'd be able to use some plugins that otherwise give me inconvenient workflow

First off, you don't need to use jbridge with Reaper. The native bridge in Reaper works just fine.
If you are on a PC, you can open the FX browser, right click on one of your 32 bit VSTs, then select 'run as', then 'embed the GUI'... no more annoying second window when you open that 32 bit VST.
Enjoy.

oh wow thank a lot! I'll do that.
Oh and by the way I thought jbridge was the classification not a particular type/model of a bridge, cause I'm using the native bridge

Its actually the name of a program that you can use, if your DAW has a 'flaky' bridge or no bridge at all.
