Default How to make selections of different parts in a track?

I've searched and I can't figure out how to make multiple selections. For instance, I have multiple takes in a track and I want to select different sections of each take. Whenever I select a selection it selects all the takes in the section. I'm sure there's an obvious way to get around this, but if so, I can't find it.

How can I make selections of different parts in a track without selecting everything in that track.

Thanks for your help!

Afaik, you can't.

Takes are a part of an item, and cannot be manipulated independantly
within the item. Selection works per item, so all takes within that item
are included.

You can split the item, and thus select different parts of audio in time,
but vertical (take) selection is not possible.

For this reason, I avoid 'takes' feature in reaper and use multiple track
recording as it gives me fine control over each take, even though it can
quickly become a mess and a pain to organize.

Sounds like you have it in 'take' mode instead of 'item' mode. Select Options>New recording that overlaps existing media items creates new media items in separate lanes. This lets you record new takes with the ability to edit and comp at will.

The 'take' mode is a special restricted mode that makes all recorded takes behave as one item (with alternate streams) and restricts any ability to edit or comp as separate items. More of a thing for recording MIDI.
