Default Automating Guitar Rig 5/ Native Inst

Hi Reaper users,
I am very new to Reaper after using some other DAWs and cannot figure out something quite simple: How do I automate an AU or VST effect(i.e. overdrive on/off) live in Reaper while recording? Ive searched the manual and online tutorials for this, but no luck.
many thanks,
Mike

Hello MtotheC and welcome to these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information.

What you're after is Automation - chapter 16 in the User Guide - loads of details are in there. In summary:
  • load the gear in Guitar Rig,
  • twiddle the knob you want to automate,
  • click [Param] at the top of the FX Chain GUI and select "Show track envelope"
  • in the track envelope panel, click the MIDI Learn button and adjust a knob/slider on your hardware controller,
  • set the other choices in the window, if needed; click [OK].
Now that hardware control is mapped to the VST parameter
  • change the Track Automation mode to "Write",
  • click Record and play your guitar,
  • as you adjust the hardware control the envelope points will be written into the envelope lane,
  • click Stop when done.
For playback, change the track Automation mode to "Read".

You can edit the envelope points too.

Default almost, but not quite

Ive followed everything until MIDI learn. When I try to get it to learn the switch for on/ off of a distortion inside Guitar Rig 5, it does nothing on the envelope lane inside Reaper, if that makes sense.

Open the automation panel for the track on which you have GR and select the option for "Show last touched FX parameters only", then click the power button of the distortion unit you are going to use.

That should add the parameters for the distortion FX, without listing 'all' the automatable parameters.

Enjoy.

Make sure that in the MIDI Device preferences that your controller is enabled for Input AND Control (right-click the Mode for the choices).

Works OK here (in Guitar Rig 4). Which module were you using?
