Default review.........line6 toneport gx.

toneport gx by line 6.

i was given the buks for this unit as a present for helping someone.
i wasnt expecting much frankly.
i think the retail on it is 70 buks.
well i was surprised.

heres my review.
(but run your own tests.cos all our needs are different.)
1. can be used as a straight recording interface.
i was surprised by how clean it was useing the gearbox software.
i was getting no latency. which i expected.
(you must use the gearbox in open mode to get low latency direct monitoring as far as i can see.)
2. has all sorts of guitar sounds built in.
plus modelled mic pre's.
so i did some experiments. plugged a guitar in and got lots of interesting sounds that
surprised me. there are a slew of settings without going on line n getting add ons.
way enough to keep me interested for a long time in conjunction with daw software plug ins.
for even more added variety one could plug in something like the free freeamp for even more
colors. ie.after recording a trak with gx.
dupe it to a new trak..then on dupe invoke freeamp for other colors.

i was very sceptical of the mic pre models.
but.keeping an open mind, ditched my diy mic pre's i normally use ,
and plugged in a 57 via a xlr to qtr inch convertor.
initially i didnt discover much that floated my boat.
till i realised i needed the mic pre models louder in my phones.
and heres some ADVICE. look at DRIVE on the mic pre models.
AND instead of plugging phones into the gx directly.....
connect its phone output to a PROPER headphone amp or line mixer.
(i used a stereo cable....mini male jack to rca males left n right to connect.)
once i did this i could monitor loudly in my phones while keeping recording
levels at proper level.
once i fiddled round with the mic pre settings and doing some test recordings i was surprised
by the recordings on playback. choice of setting is crucial.

THEN.....just for the hell of it.....lol....
i wondered what added colors i could get recording a vocal BUT useing
the guitar amp sounds built in.
sounds crazy does it not ? well not so fast mateys.
comes down to settings choices again !!
and choosing the right amp model n fiddling with its settings.
i swear , no word of a lie......n i hope i can find it again , i found one model i tweaked,
that was just nice for crooning vocals. by tweaking with amp settings.
.................................................. ........................
in summary this unite is a combo of devices.
sound device/mic pre/guitar amp models.
it also has a metronome, but i found i cant record it to a track in my daw.
i guess its just for practice.

i'm well aware that a few people feel i'm a fan boy of certain products.
but IN REALITY , i'm a fan of high feature low cost products.
thus i'm now a fan of this product. for its value for money.
let me say the settings you choose are CRUCIAL and your skill in hearing which ones apply
to whichever song of yours your doing at any point.
plus use a proper external headphone booster.
it all comes down to how you use this unit.

from what i can see a great song could be done useing say addictive drums
(or one of the others on the market like jamstix etc etc.)for drum traks plus this unit
for bed trak guitars n vocs. worse case you could certainly use it for guide vocs.
if you have other fancy expensive gear you would prefer to use and/or in conjunction with outboard..
for final lead vocs.

at its price point i can find nothing to fault this device.
but do your own testing, cos we are all different.
as a final test i very quikly did a ruff recording of an old surf song.
after much twiddling of different amp n models.n settings, i just smiled.
count me surprsed.
wish i had this unit when i started out years ago with nothing.
peace.
ps....as of yet ive had no prob recording traks in reaper.
pps.forgot to mention, xp install was a breeze. flawless.

Manning - I also purhased a Line 6 interface (UX1) as a "starter" unit (I am super new at this DAW stuff).

Very suprised indeed. Great value for the money, and the included software did a lot more than I would have expected it to.

Good luck and thanks for sharing!

using an XLR-quarter inch adapter will *never* yield the same results as plain old XLR2XLR... so the quality will be lessened by that as well, imo

but cool review, thanks manning

jason.
its a fair point.
and one i thought of .
but in all honesty i dont hear a problem with the gx.
i believe cos the impedence rule is followed.
ie.low impedence outs like to "look into"
hi impedence inputs.
but.this weekend i gonna experiment with a transformer front
end n see if any differences.
"iron" itself of course in transformers can have an impact
in mic pre's.

Great review Manning...

I just bought what seems to be the last one of these things in NYC... went all over the place to find it.... $49+tax!!!
I wonder if theres a new line of these on the way, as theres a big price drop and noone locally in NYC seems to have them.

The price of admission is worth it right off the bat with the NO LATENCY monitoring. My best soundcard cant get latency as tight as this thing. It will be a pleasure to track with this...
I might have to get a UX 1 when I get back!
The additional ins and outs on the UX1 would make it super useful back at the studio... could easily be set up as a reinsert...

I found the GX while looking at small bus powered interfaces to take on tour with me for the backstage and hotel downtimes...
Its really damn small and doesnt need a wall wart.
Really easy to throw the laptop on a desk and plug this thing in.

The sounds are typical line 6... I have a POD2, which in my experience is useful if you build your own simple amp setups and never use the fx / presets... If treated to a little plug in dirt and EQ after recording, I would not hesitate to use custom built sounds in a finished product...

I havent tested it yet, but the one thing that I wish that it did is to record the amp modeling AND a totally bypassed dry sound.
Seems that the way that the output pairs are tapped into the virtual signal chain, its not really possible...
Its either, record wet / or record dry & monitor wet...
Oh well... Ive had it for 45 minutes, and its already the best $49 I have spent in awhile.

Best, J

If it's like a UX1, which I use as my Audio interface, you can record processed and dry signals. On my UX1 I set the input range from Send 1 to Send 4.

One one Reaper track I select Send 1 and/or Send 2 when I want to recorded a processed sound. On a second Reaper track, I select Send 3 and/or Send 4 when I want to monitor wet, but record dry.

Alright!!!!
Yeah! With the GX / Gearbox, sends 3-4 are at the BEGINNING of the modeling chain, so I can send them to another track in Reaper!!!
Meaning I can record the dry AND the wet @ the same time... Reamp with other plugs!!!! Holy cow, this is great!

Can you assign sends 3-4 to the beginning of the modeling chain when using the UX1/UX2?

Nice.

Yes you can for the UX1, so I suppose the UX2 is the same.

With the UX1, in the Source select box of the Gearbox interface, there's also an Intrument & Mic setting. This allows you to have 1 & 2 for the Instrument effects, but you can use 3 & 4 for Microphone effects instead of dry. So you can record guitar and mic at the same time, both with their own independent effects.

Thanks for the info pete!
Cool to know how the dual mode works with the UX1.

Sorry if I am repeating myself here, but still wondering if you can send a completely dry channel to the DAW as well as the effected signal with the UX1?

From what I had read about the way Gearbox works, I was NOT expecting to be able to do this at all with the GX, but I am very happy to be wrong about it.

From the screenshots of Gearbox in action with the UX1 and UX2, it seems that the point in the simulation chain for sends 1-2 and 3-4 are in a fixed position.
With 3-4 positioned right after the ampsim, and 1-2 after the post effects.

With the UX1, is it possible to change the position of the sends to be at the VERY TOP of the chain? (before ANY FX / sim are applied?)

With the GX in Gearbox, sends 2-3 are in fixed position right at the top of the chain, which is exactly where I would want it personally, as I wont be using the post effects at all in Gearbox...

Seems to be a big advantage... for my uses anyhow, to be able to record the dry signal and the amp... For possible reamping / multing of the dry signal. I am totally psyched!!!

(Off topic) I wonder if there is a difference in the preamps between the models?

Thanks Pete...

jakerock, here's a screenshot of my Gearbox setting for my UX1 to put 3 & 4 at the beginning of the chain.

Note that the switch is 'Up' to set it to Pre. This puts 3 & 4 at the beginning of the chain.

jake.
i'm just nuts about it.lol.
read the manual in depth today.
cos i was playing so much..lol.
works perfect in reaper.
i "think" you can do what you want acording to my reading of the manual..useing the extra sends as strat said.
but not tried it.

jake.also there are a ton of "triks" i'm discovering with it,
n building ones own "amps" n "colors" etc.
like anything ya gotta dig in n experiment.

i thought it was just canned stuff, but this isnt true.
one can mix stuff around.

experiment with amp n cab model TOGETHER with the row of stomp boxes in the middle.
i'm discovering new things all the time.
nothing to also add external stomp boxes feeding it n combos like that. theres also a LOT in working with its eq settings n dry vs effect levels etc.
god bless.

Yeah... Im pretty geeked out on it right now too manning.

As I think you were saying... Its not all about the presets at all!
They are actually pretty bad.

I have had a POD 2.0 for a long time and got great sounds out of it by trimming off all the verb and comp and BS, just using a straight amp / cab combo and tweaking the settings for that. The presets in that thing were CHEESED out to infinity. "Welcome to the worst of the 80's"

Its the same for this thing, but I think it sounds a little better than the POD in the first place and is absolutely easier to tweak on the screen as opposed to the POD 2.0 hardware.

NO LATENCY?!?!?!?
What I really cant believe is that recording guitar thru / into the computer is now a NON -ISSUE. Which for me personally was in obscenely large hurdle, as I simply cannot play through an amp 80% of the time at my place, and the delay, no matter how I tried to ignore it, was a total buzzkill to playing guitar.

Im thrilled... gonna read the manual more in depth myself.

If you find some fun stuff, let us know... I'll do the same.
Have fun!

Default Some questions about the UX1

I've been sorta looking at the UX1 (which is on sale at musiciansfriend.com for $89.99 at the mo). I have a few questions.

1. Does the mic pre on the UX1 supply phantom power? (I assume the one on the GX does NOT supply phantom power?)

2. I notice the stated "minimum system requirements" are for a P4 1.2 MHz. However, I am wondering if there is any chance I could use this interface (or perhaps the UX2) with my PIII 650 MHz just for straight audio recording, without any of the modeling/DSP stuff? Are there some generic drivers (like ASIO4ALL or something) that would work with this interface?

The main thing I need the interface for with the laptop is to have a portable, all in one unit (interface, preamp, phantom power) to run acoustics analysis on rooms when I do on-site acoustics consultation.

There are other USB interfaces I know will work with my laptop, but if I know I could use one of the Line 6 ones, it could do double duty for when I want to lay down guitar tracks on my main computer.

I've been using an M-Audio Mobile Pre with that laptop for this purpose (and it works just fine), but I have to give that one back, so I'm looking for a deal on something else.

Any insight would be much appreciated!

scottdru, my UX1 doesn't supply phantom power.

I think the UX2 does.

scott.
no phantom on gx.
i dont know if this pre feeding the gx will keep you happy.
(includes phantom).
http://www.proaudiosuppliers.com/apex-apa1.html
v cheap. but never heard one mate.

jake.
i was just intending to use the gx to get ruff guitar leads down.
but now re thinking that.lol.

note the mic pre's built into the gx.
ive already done some interesting test vocs.
i suspect our prices were low cos line 6 is gonna continue
puffing out devices of this nature with more and more libraries of amp n mic pre models.
but frankly theres enough in the unit now to keep me happy for ages.
did you notice also a guitar tuner built in mate.

but the trend is obvious mate.
within 7 yrs prolly a product the size of the gx that
emulates every blinkin mic pre n guitar cab known.

in the gx help read about the different guitar amps n cabs.
notice the history of ORANGE. n the old marshalls.
(gotta get a plug for us brits.lol.)
some interesting history in the help file pdf mate.

If you're interested, you can add on more packs, the bass pack is wonderful. Even for certain guitar tones, you can get a few great sounds out of that.

Stratman, Manning: Thanks for your input, guys. Sounds like my suspicions re phantom power on the GX and UX1 were correct. Guess if I get one of these Line 6 jobbies I'll have to go with the UX2, which clearly DOES offer phantom power.

The question now is whether or not I can somehow use the interface in a P3 650 MHz laptop -- either with native drivers or with a third-party driver.

I actually don't need ASIO drivers for the acoustics analysis software I use (Room EQ Wizard, ETF and R+D).

Is there any plug and play WMD compatibility with these Line 6 interfaces?

Yeah, I've already got a number of Rane MS-1 pres that I could use, and the other option is that I could use a separate phantom power supply box. But my aim is to have an "all-in-one box" solution for the on-site acoustics analysis gigs.

I don't need anything spectacular with regard to audio interface or preamps -- pretty much any current audio interface and any half-decent preamps (so long as they go from 20 Hz to 20 kHz) will be more than adequate for acoustics analysis. Even if the specs of either are within approx. +/-3dB from 20 to 20k, the anomalies in the interface and pre will be extremely nominal relative to the kinds of peaks and nulls we see in pretty much any room.

I bought a Toneport GX from JRR Shop so I could have something small to carry around with me to demo reaper to people.

Before I got my laptop, I plugged it into my girlfriend's dad's PC so I could test it and he could play around with it

I never got it back

I finally got a KB37 which suits the purpose a bit better but man, he writes all day long on that toneport and just loves it to death. That is a steal of a unit

Jesus Christ, will you PM him already? ARRRRRGHH!

I think that the Toneports will probably work for you, as the gearbox software doesnt need to be running to use the inputs in your DAW, and the buffers in the GX ASIO control panel go from 128 to 4096 with resolutions of 16, 24, and 32 bit.
Pretty likely that your older laptop will be able to deal with the GX @ the higher buffer settings...

I'm a bit thick so would someone please clarify if it's possible to record wet&dry with the GX?

This is the dealbreaker for me since i currently use a borrowed ux1 to record wet&dry for later reamping of the dry signal tru my guitar stack. On a side note this is something I'll recommend trying if you are happy with the tone of your guitar gear & have mics to record said tone...

Thanks

You should be able to, I believe the GX uses the same Gearbox software (I don't think there's a separate version of Gearbox for the GX)

So I bought the GX (50$!?! why the hell not?) and it does record wet&dry exactly as the UX models. Great unit with extremely high bang for the buck ratio.

yep winfield.
still lovin my gx.
will do me for a looong time .
my prob is there are soo many settings possibilities
finding the time to try em all..lol.
my only criticism is the tad wimpy phone out ...
so i smacked the out into a line mixer for phone boost plus feeding monitors etc.
a nice solution is to find an old fostex or tascam line mixer.

Today I succumbed to GAS again and bought the Gearbox Gold Plugin. It's plummeted in price recently and can now be found for $99 at Sweetwater (and possibly some other places).

Now back to anxiously refreshing the delivery page.

"license key USB dongle" to run the software- Use Line6 Gearbox Gold Bundle for further VST / AU Processing inside your PC or Mac DAW - in real time, or post
processing re-amping - right inside your PC or Mac.

from my intense research - this is what I have learned about this incredible blow out bundle. ( was $699 2 years ago).

I got this to use as an AU plugin on my Macbook Pro - for Reaper Audio, Logic studio,

The included Toneport DI hardware interface is a step up from the Toneport GX - Although both are missing the external "Mix input that my Guitarport and XT Live have. i use this to play along with my Ipod.

Toneport DI has a single 1/4" MONO input - but includes a PAD switch - to run hotter signals. I'll probably use a passive XLR to 1/4 transformer - to feed a SM-57 Mic into the Toneport DI. Then I can use the 6 modeled vocal preamps in the Gold Gearbox VST/AU bundle in a hotel room for practice, scratch tracks.

Toneport DI has separate headphone and left / right 1/4" phone jack Line outs - to feed powered monitors. Metal Box.

I discovered that - yes I can transfer my Rifftracker license between XTLive, Guitarport, and Toneport DI.

But I hear reports that - No - I can not transfer the Gold Model Pack Bundle with VST/AU support to ANY other Line6 hardware. Its fixed to ONLY work with the Toneport DI box, which is needed as the "license key dongle"-

I'll probably transfer the Rifftracker software to the Toneport DI - and use it for demo song writing, and then when I fire up my MOTU 828 MK3 or Phonic Helix 18 firewire interfaces for studio work - still connect the toneport DI via USB - so I can run the VST/ AU Gearbox Gold plugins within my DAW applications.

Also for those who are frustrated with latency issues with NI Guitar Rig, or Amplitube - you owe it to yourself to try the Line6 solution here. I know from my Guitarport experience running latest Gearbox on my Macbook pro that somehow they have reduced the Latency to an incredible low level. its the only type of virtual guitar amp modeling I would consider for the live use.

Another hidden feature - Gearbox 3.6 has a very robust external MIDI control spec. Could control the whole thing live with a Behringer FCB-1010 with third party UNO firmware. Download all the latest Gearbox 3.6 manuals and read up on it.

http://line6.com/support//thread.jsp...=1037&tstart=0

I'm sure others here have my daily internet ritual:

* check for Reaper update

* check for MPC-1000 JJ OS update

* check for Line6 update

The award for value added - post sale from a major hardware vendor goes to Line 6. True they keep releasing rehashed versions of the POD 2.0 and Vetta at all price points - but with the free updates, they typically add 20% additional new features to their old hardware every year.

For $99 for the Gold Gearbox AU/VST/RTAS plugin bundle I can only assume they must be working on a new version with Vista 64 support.

How many newbies buy a new laptop with Vista 64 OS - and then discover a very short list of supported Audio interfaces, and very buggy MIDI problems.

I am just discovering that with the demo VSTs. I love how Reaper has the Learn... button that makes it very transparent.

yeah those are too true. Just add in "Surf Engadget for no good reason" and you got me all figured out.

When I got my PODxt and a month or two after they released the 3.0 firmware I knew I was hooked good. I suspect that this is kinda the end of the line for GearBox, but I'm not sure if I care all thaaaat much. Unless I really need 64-bit support. Or they develop a Linux native version. Or JS support.

that is an awesome deal. Shame gearbox gold is still priced at £300 in the UK - rougly six times the US cost! I already have a UX 2 on my desktop PC, but a toneport DI would be great for my laptop, especially if I got the VST plugins with it.

Is there anyone here in the UK who has ever bought something from american musical or sweetwater?

markheath, there used to be a way of getting this cheaper.

Check out this thread and in particular post number 4 by BoxofSnoo.

Well, my GearBox Gold came today! I know many of you have this already, let me just run through my own mini-review. Hey, it's what I do.

Bottom line... amazing. The sounds are clearly better than what is on my PODxt. More clarity, it seems.

The DI box is very solid, way more than I thought. It's steel and not plastic like I thought! However, I've had problems with USB sound cards on my Dell lappy before, this is no exception. Static bursts under some CPU load (even opening the list of tones saved from my PODxt to disk), and kinda slowish as a pure ASIO card. (For ToneDirect, it works really really well, more on that later)

So, forget it for now, use it just as a dongle. With my firewire interface I get 5ms anyway. Awesome! Chaining the VST with a bunch of other stuff opens up a huge amount of possibilities. 2 simultaneous inputs with their own GearBox chain ie vocals and guitar is easy. Still 5ms a bit off for timing, kinda hard to overdub.

Third option! Standalone GearBox as an input just like you would with the UX1. You can record 2 stereo tracks, both effected and dry, and the direct output is super low latency and effected. Also awesome! Get close with GearBox and use the VST to reamp and get it perfect.

Sounds are really great! Some might have some complaints about the tone - they always do, with line6 stuff, for some reason - but it's really super simple to use, what I would call pro quality, and very flexible. Worth $99? No question! $149? I'd still say yes. Possibly if you can use the DI box flawlessly it's worth even a bit more. A killer deal. I'm glad I got it, even with its little flaws.

Default plug in for re-amping

When I got the UX2 I was kinda disappointed that it didn't come with the VST plug-in. I guess that's my mistake for not doing enough research...

It would be ideal if you can use the standalone gearbox for zero-latency monitoring during recording and fine tune your tone with the plug in afterwards.

Does anybody have a different approach achieving the same result?
Otherwise I might buy the gold bundle anyway since I think it's worth it.

Cheers

I have to say I was disappointed too that there were no VST plugins with my Toneport KB37. I still think it's a great deal and I have been using the effects live on vocals while playing a sampler (MPC style but with GURU and Battery) and it's been smooth. This is all with Vista, I know! who woulda thunk it.

Here are some of my laptop tips.
1. Turn off WiFi & Bluetooth (I have a switch for this)
2. Turn off any scanning things: antivirus, search cataloguing...
3. Turn off Aero. I found a way to create a desktop shortcut that does this in a click.
4. Run it LoRes (800x600). This is not important but I find it cool for live because I can see it from a distance and it simplifies things.
5. Latency at 128samples and assign the knobs to do cool things to your VSTs.

Having the switch below the knob on the KB37 enables multiple sounds easily accessible, it's great.

I had a some digital noise coming though when my Dell XPSM1330 laptop was plugged into the power and discovered it to be a ground loop hum. I found a ground loop isolator from a car stereo shop solved the problem for $20.

I'm still contemplating getting the gold bundle deal on the line6 site US$169.95. plugins plus every model pack. Aussie dollar is strong. Hmm

I got the glitches figured out, thanks to pipelineaudio. I think the biggest culprit was the video card. Just slow it down (pardner) and it works perfectly.

I have been running it at 512 samples because I don't really care too much about latency since I hear it immediately through its outputs, but I can get it down to about 6.1/12ms as reported on the Reaper menu bar.

I also have the DI out going into an input on my Mackie Onyx Satellite and with a flip of a switch I can jump into using the plugins with multiple inputs, so I can do vocals at the same time.

This is still a fabulous bargain.

One gotcha, I'm still struggling with, a bit... no way to change patches on the fly via MIDI. So it's not really like a POD on the PC that way. Well, there is one way to do it, but it involves triggering a send of a SysEx string...

It is funny i was looking into the BEHRINGER Di box with cabinet emulation when i ran upon the toneport DX. I understand the DI box might work better with using external effect pedals and such when recording direct... but the toneport sounds like i might be able to lay down some nice tracks..... i did some searching on Youtube and there are a lot of people that have posted tests using the toneport... mostly metal... i play a large range of music from Jazz to metal.... i am really looking forward to purchasing this thing....

Straight from the Line 6 forum:

"Hi gang,

I just wanted to give you all the heads up that we will be running another Gold Bundle download special around the 2nd week of August! Don't miss out on this one as you'll be able to save...well a bundle. Thanks guys.

It refers to the downloadable bundle that can be activated with any pod or toneport. The Gold bundle that sells in the stores that comes with its own interface is already at $99.

I bought a toneport GX around 3 months ago.If it broke down I'd buy another one straight away whilst the other one got sorted out.
Best,"Bang for Buck" deal out there and even better if you got the,"Gold Bundle" deal.

It has yet to not please me for recording Vocals/Bass And Guitar.
Some of the sounds record so well it's not worth the bother recording dry IMHO but that's a matter of taste.

I got the Silver bundle ($80 from SameDayMusic.com) yesterday and the free upgrade to Gold is already in effect. I used it immediately and all is well - the DI still reports that it is a "TonePort DI-S" but everything works just fine.

80 bucks - amazing.
