Default VCAs will work for me.

I have made a test VCA project for your testing. It actually seems to work very well. I have all vcas in a top level VCAs folder and all slaves control audio tracks, not folder tracks. In my case I have a Vox folder, VoxLd for lead vocals, VoxBg for background vocals, I put a delay on the Celine vocal in VoxLd and I put a distortion on VoxBg track Girls.

The Master Slaves Groups are as follows
Master
VCAs VCAs
Vox Vox
VoxLd VoxLd
VoxBg VoxBg

Then the tracks are Slaves like this:
Celine Slave to VCAs, Vox, VoxLd
Girls Slave to VCAs, Vox, VoxBg

Sample test project for Reaper 5. Click the DL icon on top of this page:

This seems to allow automation on any of them to control appropriately and as expected. Let me know if I'm missing something.

Let me know what you think !

I was able to. Checking it out now.

EDIT:
I don't have the waves VSTs so it showed me an error, but after deleting them its a great proof of concept. Thank you for sharing.

Cool but with all that ribbons its really hard to tell what is what unless opening groups (I'm speaking for myself),and some colors are hard to see (like many other things in default theme).I hope that will be sorted out in near future

Once you understand the fundamental relationships VCA VoxLd is tied to VoxLd children etc.. then you don't even look at the ribbons because you know that the related VCA is controlling the related child tracks.

I have updated the test1.zip project to use a 1khz sine wave at 0dB, you can see each vca drop 6 db in the envelopes and the corresponding tracks / meters showing the cummulative effect. Very nice I think ! Click the image for the animated gif.

I updated the project once more.
http://www.sunriverstudios.com/temp/test1.zip

VCAs are going to work really well from what I can tell. The interaction of my limiter vst and the volume envelope for the audio channel and it's parent vcas seem just right. As usual, the parent folders of the audio tracks should stay at 0dB as moving these or automating these will NOT change the sends as expected. Play around with the latest project and let me know what you all think.

Track 9 is sending the left channel to an octave fx channel and you can see the interactions of the automations when monitoring the meters. click on the image twice to get the full size.
