Default Video in REAPER?

Hi All

A simple question: Just shot a short .mp4 video with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 tablet.

Is it possible to edit the footage, as well as the audio, in REAPER?

I fully expect the answers to be less than simple!

Any info greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

yes! you can edit audio and video in REAPER. I've done a bunch of them.

and since you're using a phone camera you might need the transform options

Hi John - Thanks very much for the post.

I've been watching your very helpful video over & over to see how to get started in editing my video.

It's all really helpful advice but I don't seem to have 'Video Processor' in the Effects browser.

(I have REAPER v.4.78.)

Also the raw video appears in the Video Window, but how can I edit (cut up/ delete/move around) parts of the video. Do you have another video that covers these aspects?

Many thanks again for your help & advice.

video processor is new in V5.

Want to try the beta? go here http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=22836

For cutting and moving it's nearly identical to working with audio items. split, trim, move, copy and paste all work.

Hi Jon

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Thanks very much for your last reply & the REAPER V. 5 beta link.

At the moment my external drive, where I back up everything, is Kaput so I guess I should tread water until V. 5 is out.

Any indication as to when that might be, please?

V5 is already usable just fine.

Remember to keep the grid to "Frame" and snap active when you edit video. Set the right video frame rate in the project settings. That'll be your display frame rate.

Other than that, Reaper kicks ass.

Oh yeah, if you want crossfades for the video, place the video processor in the item fx(SHIFT+E default shortcut iirc) of the video item on the RIGHT side of the crossfade, and choose the preset "item fades affect video". Not the most comfortable method, but you could pop that in to a Resources "FX Chain" slot of the SWS Extension, and fire that off with an action to place it in the selected item.

"item fades affect video". that can just go on the video track rather than the item.

I'm going to give the public beta of Resolve 12 a try. It's FREE and they've just overhauled the NLE portion of it and added VST/AU support.

you may have to paste them into the editor for now. I'd like capslock to work there as well.

Hi Jon,

Just upgraded to REAPER v.5. with Video. Terrific.

Am just getting familiar with all the commands.

It seems a little odd at first not having the footage on a track above the audio track but I can deal with that.

Just finished an animated short, imported from Flipaclip, which had no audio.

Added audio in REAPER - no problem.

I was able to 'scrub' along the audio track, to locate precise frames, quite quickly & efficiently.

But in some footage shot through a movie camera, which obviously has it's own audio, the scrubbing seems to be a lot slower .

Might this be because I'm dealing with two different beasts here - animated stuff & conventional video footage?

Oh, by the way, how do you get your track U.V. meters to appear vertically on the end of the TCP's please? Looks very cool!

Thanks very much.

Sorry! Just remembered.

Is it possible to turn on 'Slow' or 'Fast Motion' please?

At the moment I've just increased the BPM which seems to work.

Thanks again.

That behavior can be reversed in the project settings.

It's probably down to the file format. I have a lag of about 500ms when moving the playhead and seeing the video window update.
Make sure your frame and sample rates for the project match the source files.

That I'm not really sure what you mean. That's the default track layout for 5.0

You can alt-drag edges to change a video playrate or insert stretch markers, just like audio!

Warning - how much you can stretch/shrink can depend on the video decoder used. Stretching a video reduces the frame rate, 30 becomes 15 at half the play rate and it starts to look choppy. Shrinking the video too much can result in dropped frames, at least in reaper's preview. Usually no problem shrinking a video to 5x for me.

This video has several timelapses made from normal video clips (timelapse videos are usually photos taken at longer intervals and then converted to video at the frame rate of your choosing)

Hi Jon - Thanks very much for the reply.

Quote:

What I mean is, having the visual video material appear in the track above the audio track - just like having a strip of film stretched out in a track above the audio track.

Actually, I just zoomed right in on the track & it seems to make the delay shorter.

Quote:

Thanks for pointing me towards the themes. Just above 'Themes' is 'Layouts' & if you click 'Track Panel' there is an option to turn on/off vertical meters. So I now have cool looking vertical meters! Thanks.

Of course! Halving the length of a section is going to double the playback speed. Stupid of me not to realise that. Thank you.

Again, many thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Default Video glueing?

Hi All

When editing video (in REAPER 5) glueing two sections of film together seems to wipe out the visuals (I get a blank, green video window).

Is there another way to do this, does anyone know?

Many thanks.

glue works on the audio only because you're converting it to a wav (or whatever your project settings are)

You can render as a new video but that's about it right now.

I did that with my outro sequence to make sure the text and everything is the same every time and only takes up 1 track instead of 4.

You can group the items or lock them

Got several hours worth of footage that I have to edit down to 3 minutes.

So lots of small clips.

I hoped I could glue stuff together to save time as I went along.

Maybe it will get covered in the future?

Thanks very much for the help.
