AU or VST ? what's more stable, efficient in Reaper v5 or v4
Hi,
following quite a few crashes since v5,
I was pointed out by a plugin company's support team that it might not be a good idea to have AU side by side VST of same product available in Reaper.
In Reaper v4 was not much of an issue.
I must say I've had more issues with AU's in v4 and v5 as well ( with a particular quirk among different plugins from different developers where there would be only 1in/1out available for stereo plugins, with some left-right oddities, like boosting a gain would only boost the signal left )
Now in v5 I am having more crashes and start to wonder what might be best, AU or VST ?
Any opinions, experience?
Thanks
Regards
Nico

Six of one or half a dozen of the other for me.
I keep hearing talk about AU being the 'preferred standard' and everything moving to that or some such. Except I see more VST versions in general.
If there's some risk of running AU side by side with VST in Reaper, I've seen no evidence of it.
Basically, if I run across a bug in one version, I'll just try the other. 8 out of 10 times that solves the problem. The other 2 turn out to be a consistent bug in both versions.
I'm pretty convinced at this point that even the major plugin makers (like Waves for example) play fast and loose with standards and we have individual DAW makers writing specific workarounds for popular buggy plugins just to avoid finger pointing (that might not be believed) and anyone saying "But it works in 'X' DAW" as an excuse. But now I'm just ranting again...

I am on Reaper v5, latest pre version.
OSX 10.10.5
In my experience, most VST versions plugins behave "better" than AU versions.
Define "better" ?
Well, often, no GUI's in AU and ...more crashes of AU then VST.
I am stunned by this experience, cause AU is Apple's native plugin format, which, i assumed, would perform therefore "better" than VST.
So, in my case, totally utterly b*llshit conclusion.

I'm not astonished, because Reaper started as a pure Windows DAW and used VSTs. The Mac version was released much later.
I mainly use VSTs and never had a crash on Yosemite. But I'm still on Reaper 4.77

Thanks for your reply, yes has been my experience as well.
Also worked for me to swap them around.
Indeed it is remarkable how it's not necessarily the small devs that supply buggy software, quite the contrary ( Klanghelm, Sonimus, TDR, Valhalla, Toneboosters, Kuassa, Kazrog... have been rocksolid here both with AU and VST...Airwindows with AU always works great )
v5 crashing much more here ( plugin related from the crash report ) I wonder what has changed in v5 that would make plugins - AU or VST - more prone to crashing the software
More experience with AU or VST? or related bugs ?

Thanks for your replies,
yes I remember a few AU-GUI related crashes
then I also had crashes with VST's while opening/closing plugin window, with automation ( Soundtoys v4 )...
so pretty much like Serr, having to swap a format for the other
forgot to mention Audioease Altiverb 7, stable in v4, now had a few crashes in v5
can anybody from Cockos confirm the AU + VST versions together of a plug being less stable ?
or the mixed use of AU + VST ?
thanks,
regards
Nico
