Default Apply Track/Take FX Option Is Greyed Out

I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNpAAhnR09A

Now I want to try to apply FX to one region of my MIDI or .WAV file. I was able to 'split item at time selection' but my option to 'Apply Track/Take Effects To Items As New Take in the Item' tab is completely greyed-out.

Did you already insert an effect (FX) either to the track or the item itself?
Otherwise these options won't be available.

This video might also be interesting in general: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpo66oNNAiQ

Yes, I did. I was hoping to pack my MIDI full of FX in different sections on top of the Track FX. But if I take it off the main track can I still add different FX to different sections? Thanx for the video.

Yes, you can add effects directly to items: http://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#9x5tJlm4STU

As simple example:
(1) Split one MIDI item into 4 smaller MIDI items/sections
(2) Then add different effects to each of the 4 MIDI items/sections

You can also have effects on both the track and an item (on the same track) ...

Or are you looking for something else?

That video was very helpful. That was exactly what I was looking for! But you contradict what you said earlier:

Sorry if this wasn't clear from my first post.
What I meant was that an effect needs to be inserted in at least one of the two areas (track or item) to enable the 'Apply Track/Take Effects ..' options:

(o) effect only on the tack
(o) effect only on the item
(o) effect on both the track and item

Currently you need to use the keycommands for it (if no FX present):
