Default Reaper 5 wish list

Since I'm pretty sure we'll see some signs of v5 this year (either beta or final)
here's my top 10 Reaper 5 wish list:

1. ARA (for Melodyne of course)
2. VST3/Vocalign Support (or a Vocalign-like feature)
3. PiP (ala Studio One Mastering feature)
4. Bug-free Pitch Envelopes (you know, the clicks)
5. Proper Comping (the full state of an item should be saved/recalled)
6. Normalize on Render option
7. Relative backup, reapeaks, render, etc. directories... Come on!
8. Folder Track Editing (Edit directly on the Folder Track, with a waveform preview for all tracks in the folder)
9. Full native DDP support
10.EBU R128 Functions

Honarary mentions: Edit Groups (Not a priority, it can be done with macros), Area Selection, VCAs,
improved Quantize, more comprehensive Auto-Save, Split Arrangement View

What's your top 10?

Amazing! Not ONE of yours would have made mine, if I had one.

Just goes to show.

I will have to go away and think about this one....

The two top requests(area selection and edit groups), automation, VCAs and metering. That's standard "we need this to work well today" stuff for editing(of audio) and mixing.

And whatever cool new thing they can come up with.

@gembez Excellent list! Points #2, 3, 7 and 9 would certainly make my list too.

A few other items on my wish list:

#1 Full review of the screens and dialogs for better usability and consistency.

#2 Make more aspects of Reaper themable, like the fx window.

#3 More modern, more informative UI for existing Reaper plugins and a new spectrum analyzer plugin. Give Schwa and WT a few development cycles and they can help here!

#4 Soundcloud upload (or take ownership, complete, document the plugin that someone developed)

A bug free version of Reaper 4, enhanced what's already there.

I really think that the devs should release a bug free version from time to time before they add new features. New features often means new bugs. Too many unfinished/inconsistent things and bugs are collecting dust since years!

Yes, i know. I was only talking about known bugs.

I think it's really not bad pushing things forward and adding new features.

But sometimes it's good to have a break to fix things before you move on.

My list consists of:

- ARA Support (For more than Melodyne!)
- More MIDI Editing Functions such as equal-length note division
- Bezier Style Envelopes to effectively trim MIDI data (e.g. Velocity and AFTERTOUCH(!))
- Better automation that doesn't "jump" around when I'm doing quick edits
- More organized automation panel
- Skinning of OS elements, even if it means changing it from white to another solid color (buttons too!)
- Area Selection and Editing
- Item-Edge-to-Mouse-Cursor split-division kind of editing (a la cut tool + alt in Cubase/Nuendo)
- Pseudo-automation lanes to view loudness (RMS, peak, etc) over time rather than in a traditional meter
- Better docker positioning (a la Sequoia/Samplitude)
- Built-in re-sizable metering tools that can be docked and graphically updated in real-time (simplified JS docking maybe?)
- Mouse Modifier Banks (Up to 10) to simulate tools for DAW refugees
- Automation types: linear/bezier, sine, saw, and square waves which can be manipulated by the handle to determine beats/hz (with more mouse modifiers to accompany fine editing)
- More sampling kind of things would be nice...
- MIDI Editor "Navigator" that is a simple matrix similarly to PreSonus Studio One, that consists of checkboxes for items that contain MIDI data which can be checked to view ghost notes across several tracks and even be "ghost transposed" by octaves. This would make harmonizing so much easier in my opinion.
- Automation/Envelope Undo bug fixes
- POST-FADER EFFECTS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

That's all I can think of at the moment but I'm positive that there's more. It's not that these are missing and I expect them... It's literally my wish list.

What specifically do people want more of in MIDI though?

Not played with "real" MIDI devices on it yet so haven't seen what's missing.

less MIDI, more audio.

* .reaparts
* swing grid for main timeline too - MIDI folks have it..
* warp markers
* CUE goodies / implementing the "Trimmer"
* automation items
* GHOST support for audio and automation items - MIDI folks have it..

maybe these are for Reaper v1289..

After completing a (very) large project in 2012, I have some real requests that seemed really needed at times:

- A channel gain (before FX and fader).

- Bussing system (different from folder, more like protools, I don't like folders they are error-prone)

- I don't want to need to mark the last track in a folder. Sometime when I have a multi-level deep folder, it becomes a mess very quickly. I lost quite some time on this, messing with drags and drops to manage all this. Also, it's only possible to edit the folder with one little icon on the TCP, not accessible when I'm i mixer view. I want a menu for this, or more control anyway.

- VCA, with folders, I have to put all my send effects IN the folder to really be able to control the volume of an instrument group. I want to put my sends outside of the folder and still adjust the volume of the folder, with the volume of the sends changing accordingly.

Edit:

- i forgot: automation! Automation right now is very messy. If you move a portion of the track AFTER you've made a lot of automation, you're in for troubles. Also, editing automation on multiple tracks is a pain. Really, all the automation behavior is sketchy and needs an overhaul. More times than not, when there is a little mistake in one automation lane, I prefer to redo it from scratch (I have nice controllers) rather than editing it with the mouse => that's not ideal and is the symptom of something bad.

- A way to package a project into a neat zip. Let me explain: i already have a dedicated folder for my project, with recorded files in the right place, but sometimes I import samples from another directory, sometimes the singer does overdubs and sends them over DropBox, and I just drag and drop these files in te timeline. When I save the projects, these new imported files are not always copied in the project folder (for whatever reason). But 3 months later, when the track is released, someone asks for the project with all the source files, and I usually zip the project folder myself, forgetting all the external files... I want a quick way to do this automatically.

1. A proper step sequencer layout specifically geared towards drum programming.

Why are so many people requesting 'area selection' and why is it confusing me? Is it as simple as I'm thinking, just selecting an area of your project and having everything within that selection area highlighted, etc?

Also, I've been recording a lot of MIDI this past week or so and I've been very happy with Midi stability, performance and editing... what are the things that you guys want to change on the MIDI front?

Heh heh, well I just took for granted Reaper had one but come to think about it, where is it? I don't use them very often but they can come in handy for some things. Like a two and a half count 16th snare roll that you want to capture live velocities for. Or a string run where you want to capture the live velocity feel.

In the nearly 3 years I've been using Reaper I haven't had a reason to look for it.

Lets see...

1. Switchable Pre/Post Fader Metering per track.

2. Peak and/or RMS(set by master track)metering per track. switchable peak, Rms, or both.

1. phase-aware, multi-track elastic audio/warp without having to group/hack audio items into millions of bits
1b. + something like vocalign would be very nice
2. better tools for managing/mastering albums - 'these are the projects that make up my album'/'re-render only those that have changed to floating point and re-import into my master project' - PiP where projects are hard-linked back to the original instead of being copies could probably be a way this could work.

that's it, really. i've kinda stopped noticing reaper releases because it does most of what i want already. e.g. MIDI support was fine for me in v3.

- Single column FX browser.
- SWS track/item notes working properly on OSX
- Elimination of theme support and a hiring of a very experienced UI/UX designer.

There are a lot of "simple" actions that can be added to Reaper to enhance and speed up MIDI editing such as a variable division tool where you can divide a note by decimal values (greater than 1). The variable could be determined by the distance from note edge to desired split. If you assigned this to a mouse modifier you could essentially divide a note by half, trips, quads, quints, etc...

This split-division action could be applied to item editing to in that you could automatically split items variably which can applied for pseudo-gating and quick glitch editing. It's just great for audio and MIDI manipulation.

I might try to create a script if at all possible. If it's not, I might try to go beyond that... It's something I find extremely desirable.

Already done much good for MIDI, but many more are missing (ED rights). But the biggest problem: always click with the mouse to make the active main window, after open plugins and other windows(I know about pass through "crutches").

My biggest wish for Reaper 5 is that it contains some really big changes.

All the little changes can stay in 4.xx but Reaper 5 will require a Reaper 5 Explained tutorial (shameless and selfish) and I don't want to do it for small changes.

I'd like:

1. VCAs
2. Area Selection and Editing
3. Elastic Audio
4. Playlist type Editing and Comping
5. Edit Groups
6. Bundled Virtual Instrument Plugins and Sounds

I disagree with this. This is where the labour costs come in and all of a sudden reaper costs as much as the other DAWs that are bundled with stuff you don't use.

Guess when asking for MIDI I think people often mean sequencing in general rathet than outboard gear. At least I do.

Mmh, not only : i wish we'll get some more care for both ITB and OTB Midi (and triggering / cv-gate, etc).
For instance, being able to tell Reaper if his clock tempo is either Slave or Master, or being able to use a trigger input signal to drive Reaper's clock.

Default Reaper 5

1) VST3
2) Subfolders in Browse FX Window + possibly ratings
3) Better System of Automation
4) Better work with MIDI
5) MONO Tracks
6) Better (clarity) work with Folders and a different color for the Folder
6) Render Track without FX
7) Easier MIDI Learn
8) Better Reaper FX GUI
9) Enable/Disable FX in Mixer with Button (as in Studio One)
9) Better Track Random Colors (very bad color - I would rather not use, but it's a great feature!)
10) When I open my x86 VST in x64 Reaper, will also open the "Show UI" Window. I think it's unnecessary - too many windows.

I look forward to Reaper 5!

Sorry for my English.
peace

I'd like a kinda

---ReaChannelstrip,
EQ/Dyn. in one. Doing some livemixing with reaper, this would be faster for working and one had only one plug opened.

May be it's a bit early but here I go!
  • Live use: hunt audio glitches on user operations
Dstruct made a great list about that somewhere. For my selfish concern, glitch-free bypass/unbypass and online/offline would be the priority (no PDC in my case)
  • Record: comping (that works)
  • API: something like KbdSectionInfo* GetSection(int uniqueId)
This is the very last bummer I'm facing in the API. The func I'm requesting would solve a ton of probs (like enumerating native actions, dealing/registering things in MIDI action sections, etc..)
Today I have piles of workarounds standing ones on the others as they can down to WDL/SWELL (for OSX). With some "wtf!?" consequences for users too. This sucks. This sucks sooo hard.
  • More localization love
Some foreign users work hard about that behind the scene, let's encourage them!
  • WASAPI: get it out of the "experimental" state
A simple communication from Cockos about what really sucks in there would do it too
  • And, as usual, more JS love! Epecially: improved GUIs and the ability to receive SysEx
