Default 9 year old vocal improv.

So this is my 9 year old piano (and math, English, history, science etc.) student. Today I asked him to just improv-sing, and he made this up.

What do you think? I put a verb on him (maybe I should show the dry version, but it doesn't sound as nice). I'm trying to teach him how to make good lyrics; problem is, I myself suck at lyrics.

I think the best way is to just improv until you have something good, then fine tune it a bit (which is what we're doing).

I have a simple rule when it comes to kids and music. *Nothing* should stand in the way of a kid making noise. So well done!

Haha, cute.

I'm actually really liking his song. I'm thinking of ways to 'refine' it, but I really just like it raw.

But that's my problem... I really have different tastes from the rest of the world. I want to teach him to make music other people like as well, and not end up like me :P

Teach him to make music he likes first. Or better yet, let him teach you about the music he likes, and help him realize that.

Everything else will follow.

Suggestion: Don't do anything, other than what's already been done, and move forward.

Suggestion: Make sure he can listen to the work already produced (MP3?) sufficienly often enough, so he can form his own ideas, about what needs to be improved, what he likes, etc.

Ya, good points. I feel the same.

Often I feel outside pressure to do things other ways, to get "quick results"... I'm glad you guys are on par with my inner voice.

For some reason, during the week, your original question came into my head and I was ruminating about what my own, younger selfs biggest block, tended to be. (It still happen to my older self, too.)

I'd have to say it's "The Inner Editor" that demands perfection and cuts me off from being playful and joyful and experimenting freely at times, because I want a certain results.

In relation to your 9 year old, I would say, teach him to disregard (or not develop) that inner editor that keeps him from exploring freely, any and all of his ideas, to their fullest fruition.

Help him to achieve the shots, he himself, calls.

They do call it, "playing" music, after all.

Thanks! Good advice. Actually, the more I listen to this, the more I like it's raw, pure form. He's singing from the heart, and it's very cool (and sad).

And what about singing / vocal technique. What can he work on?
