Default Naive Newbie Question (JL Cooper CS-10)

Hi friends.

I'm an old school engineer, out of the scene for 15 years. Now I'm back as a hobby, and the world has changed.

I originally purchased Cubase Studio 4, and a used JL Cooper CS-10/2 to use as a transport and mix controller. After blowing the money on Cubase, I find that I like Reaper better. It works more like how I think. The problem is that I can't get it to work with the CS-10.

All the other stuff with multiple faders and decent transport buttons is terribly expensive, so I'm wondering if there's a workaround.

Am I out of my league here? Is there hope? How difficult is it to create a patch or something to make it work?

Thanks,
Dave

Is your JL Cooper a MIDI or Serial port version?

Hello orchard69 and welcome to these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information.

First steps:
-- can you tell us what you have tried so far and how far you have got?
-- does the CS-10 appear in [Options] > Preferences > MIDI Devices?
-- if so, right-click the mode and enable it for Control messages.

All I've tried is going to Options->Preferences->Control Surfaces ->Add.

The CS-10/2 does not show up on the drop down list.

That would have been too good (and easy!) to be true!

I guess I'm wondering if there's a way for Reaper to "Learn" a control device by "recording" the MIDI commands and sysex that get sent by the CS-10/2, and assigning them to Reaper commands.

As an alternative, is there a way for me to program scripts that would recognize a midi command or sysex string and then manually map them to Reaper commands?

Keep in mind that just EXPLAINING that last one was stretching my technical know-how!

Thanks so much to everyone who's helping me figure this out!

Hi all,

I just uploaded a keymap file which contains CS-10 (and CS-10/2) messages mapped to sane functions.

It took some head-scratching, but it seems to work well enough.

It does not, unfortunately, send messages back to the CS-10 to get the lights to work.

Default sending midi back

hi,

isn't there any possibility (plugin, extension) to send (custom) midi data back?

PS: thanks for the cs-10 mapping

EDIT: ok, it is possible... would be nicer with "control surface API", but i made a little JS-Script, because it's quite easy

@Straypacket

I have a CS 10 in my studio at work which I am trying to get working with Reaper. It is also a midi port version which is going through a midi interface and into my cpu. Signal lights are showing but Reaper cannot read it as a controller.

Stray I have downloaded your reaper-kb.ini file, but I am not sure where this file should go. I have tried looking up on google where keymap files should go in the Reaper directory but with no success.

Could you help me out here?

Cheers
