Default Copyright on YouTube

I have been posting amateur classical guitar pieces on YouTube including some pieces published in the 1970's. Do i need permission from the sheet music publisher to do this? Is there a short answer to ymthis question?

Kp

anything that has a copyright needs permission, even if you put a disclamer

the exception is when the copyright holder dies the protection stays until 70yrs has passed

just use your own music

wouldn't worry about it for original performance. There's a huge amount of straight up piracy on YouTube that slips through the cracks for years.

I'm assuming you mean performing them, rather than putting up pictures of the sheet music. If it's the former, you're fine. YouTube is a member of BMI and ASCAP. If it's a song in the public domain then you're free to go and it doesn't matter.

If you're actually displaying the sheet music, then yes, you do. They own the copyright to *that* and so you will need to get them to sign off on it.

Just a heads up that a number of times I performed like that, the scanners caught the video by analyzing the audio and disabled the audio as a copyright violation. Surely, my cover wasn't that good since it was just me strumming and singing. Never was quite sure it flagged them other than that though since it didn't flag the other three billion doing the same thing.

It also happened to me. I did a Tom Petty cover (me + 1 guitar) and they removed the audio?!

I was like -"Dang I knew it was good, but not THAT good"
