Default Pirates a new song

Mikael (MSun) kindly added his guitar talents and critical ear to my engineering such as it is. His edgy guitar compliments the smooth wistful song.

Nice tune, and cool words. What's the bass you're holding in the pic of you in your younger days? It looks pretty cool, and probably collectable now.

Thanks, glad you liked it.

It's an old Rosetti Bass8 semi acoustic. Rosetti was an English importer and it was made by Egmond (Holland). My first bass. Absolutely effing awful piece of shit and if I found one today I'd burn it. Inch high action, dead pickups and strings in those days so thick you could stand the G up straight in the air. It was a plank but it it did one great thing for me, it taught me to play on a virtually unplayable bass. When my dad bought me a Hofner violin bass in '62 I felt I could fly. Wish I still had that one but it's long gone in the days no-one wanted them. Cheers barry

Cheers

Very cool. I love old instruments, even if they really aren't so great for playing. I had a 1962 Gibson EB0 that played OK, but sounded like total crap. Had a huge humbucking pickup right at the neck for that total tubby with no definition sound. I sold it in the 80s for a couple hundred bucks and they are like $1500 or more for one just like I had. Wish I had kept that one as well. Thanks for the info on yours. I'll have to go look them up now.

Glennbo I too had an EBO, I'd always wanted an EB3L and the shortscale EBO was total crap although beautifully made. I gave it away and have no regrets. I Have a PBass Lite and a G&L and that's all I need now.

Thanks Azimuth, much credit goes to Msundh for his Knopfleresque Lead and Rhythm playing that lifted my original recording so much. My wife's cousin Martin Smith, the man who resurrected the original Mellotron company has threatened to add Mellotron to it, that should be interesting.

No doubt, but the playing is great all around. I actually could see a tastefully done Mellotron track adding quite a bit to this song. I look forward to hearing it if that happens.

I know Martin is very busy right now servicing the Mellotrons of the rich and famous but if/when it happens I'll put up a new mix. Thanks.

Veeeeery nice.
Stratford-upon-Avon is the place for flourishing talents, indeed.
Love that Van Morrison-esque tone.

Thankyou Fabio, I've never been compared with Van Morrison before and certainly not with the bard!

Nice indeed. Msundh got the lead guitar just right. The lyrics are very good and could stand alone as poetry. You live in Stratford I see. Perhaps there is some inspiration in that. I really struggle with lyrics when I try to write them. Will the Stratford on the Avon stuff rub off on me if I come for a visit? I visited the reconstructed Globe theater in London, and it didn't help.

Well you're always welcome to visit! I think my lyrics just improve with age and practice, probably not from any association with Stratford! I'm very glad you like it. I had in mind Steven Stills' Southern Cross lyrics when I wrote this but the Pirate imagery is all mine, it just seemed to fit the plaintive chord sequence. One of my best I think.
