I assume you wrote the Opals on your list as well?

Have to say the pebble/boulder combination was launched by Unity Audio after I bought my Rocks, so they might be worth looking at too.
Even if they HAD been available at the time I suspect they would have been too big for my small room.

Another vote for the Unity Audio "The Rock" Mark II monitors. We did a side-by-side shootout with Event Opal monitors in my son's studio. The Unity Audio Rocks won hands down. The low frequency clarity of these non-ported monitors is outstanding, and the high frequency is very smooth and non-fatiguing. My son has visited many of the studios in the Washington/Baltimore area, and he has seldom been impressed with their monitors in comparison to the Rocks.

I have become a believer in non ported designs. The Unity Audio web page states that "The advantage of this design philosophy is more accurate bass with better time domain performance and a gradual 12dB per octave roll off as opposed to a 24dB roll off with ported designs." This was very obvious in comparison to the Event Opal monitors. You could hear things in the low frequency domain on the Rocks that simply were not audible when listening to the Opals.

The Unity Audio Rocks are made in England, and not many suppliers carry them here in the US. We got ours through ZenPro Audio. I can't say enough good about these guys. In our interaction with them, they have supported their products well beyond my expectation.

Here is a photo we took while doing our shootout. The Unity Audio Rocks are on their sides under the Event Opal monitors.

(grin) and even sideways on like that you still preferred them!

Agree - had mine for about a year and am still in love.
Relentlessly precise and clear compared to everything else I auditioned apart from once you get up to about 4-5k pounds a pair!
Way out of my league....

An excellent choice, if I may say so!

We use M&K for tracking, B&W for mastering, smaller M&Ks for mixing to 5.1 and Genelecs for presentation to clients.

As a follow up, I have settled on Tyler's: D3mx. It's been over a week and they have been remarkable.

I'm very much looking forward to continuing to break them in, getting to know them intimately and making more great tunes.

When I did location recording for CD (mind you, this was classical/choral) I took along a pair of B&W 805 Matrix. I have their taller brothers (804) in my living room.

I have JBL lsr6325p-1 and couldn't be happier. JBl is one of the company that put money into researches and comes up with quality stuff, specially for the price. Strongly recommend, even as a second pair.

Now am looking to get some old Dynaudio monitors.

B&W (especially the nautilus series) are absolutely great for monitoring. But as a matter of funds, I do use a pair of Event Opal instead. Very linear, very powerful and honest speakers which make a sub obsolete. As a second validation I use a pair of Klipsch RF7 (1st Gerneration) with a EAR-Yoshino 869 - which may be a little bit warmer and not as linear as the Opals but great to ensure the low- and high ends.

Factor in cost of two stereo amplifiers or four monoblocks as these are two way active.

Yes it is DIY but a high school kid could build these!
I checked out that link to the LXmini.

It sure looks like part of it is a drain pipe adapter w/ a couple of hose clamps!

You decide:

Must admit I have been quietly amused by their whole site. Alright the theory undoubtedly will work, but could they not make it slightly less obvious that their parts warehouse is located midway between Home Depot and Radio Shack?

That's because it is!

Plenty more to look at with wildly different styles, not just those prototypes.

It depends on what you are used to. If you have lived with no BS top end audio systems (like the big electrostatics, top magneplanars and so on) then you will appreciate what they do in terms of purity of reproduction. If you haven't then when you've finished them and set them up properly welcome to the club.

Those that want mega bass and ear splitting levels should look elsewhere. They will play plenty loud enough though.

Sig Linkwitz is one of the last of the dying breed of "pure" engineers not obsessed with cosmetics and size reduction

You may know him from his famous Linkwitz-Riley 4th order crossover, used in just about every monitor available today.

Here's what some others did, most suck but some are damn cool:
