Default Reaper stopped analyzing mp4 files

I have opened mp4 movie files in the past and Reaper used to sucessfully analyze the audio. However if I now open an mp4 file the audio is blank. The movie is showing but Reaper is not analyzing the audio. Any suggestions on what can cause this?

It was noticed recently that REAPER X64 doesn't want to play with mp4 anymore, while REAPER X32 just gets on with it.

I just now dragged an mp4 video (created by my android phone if that matters) successfully into 64bit Reaper v4.73. Video and audio working fine. I do have VLC media player installed, maybe that's why?

I uninstalled VLC for the test and dragged the same mp4 as last time into Reaper. Audio and video are still both working with Reaper v4.73, 64bit on Win7 64bit.

Source properties says:
Length: 2:35.924
Video: 1920x1080@30.00fps, Aspect=1.00, Decoding format=YV12
Audio: 44100Hz 2ch 32bps
Using Quicktime decoder (bridged)

If Quicktime is also an unwanted app, there's still the ffmpeg codecs as an alternative. I won't test them, as I don't have them installed (I think, that is ). For me personally VLC is a good solution as it's my favorite player anyway.

There is quite simple explanation for that..
Item properties shows active decoder for mp4 container.

It could be either VLC library, FFMPEG library or system (DirectX, Quicktime) decoder.
Preferred one can be set at Preferences -> /Video/Rex/Misc as video decoding engine.
It is also used for MP4 with only audio track. So for instance AAC files from Apple (iTunes) are also possible to directly open via these decoders, it is only necessary to change file extension from .m4a to .mp4.

To to previous quesion.. regarding necessary installation of VLC. It is not necessary, but often easiest solution for working decoder. But you can of course use other ones.. So Quicktime installation with or getting FFMPEG libraries.

FFMPEG needs to be downloaded separately (latest working 1.2 version is there)
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win...in64-shared.7z
or
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win...in32-shared.7z
for 32bit platform.

Then just extract all .dll's from bin directory in archive to Reaper's plugin folder
eg. C:\Program Files\Reaper\Plugins or %APPDATA%\Roaming\REAPER\UserPlugins\
and similarly for 32bit versions.

Which decoder option is best is up to test with particular format or personal preference..

Michal

Michal, I'm having a terrible time with this, (First time trying to work with video in Reaper as I used to use Protools) and I need to be clear about this, especially since the WIKI page about this topic is completely wrong:

Do I take ONLY the dll files from the FFmpeg installer and manually drag them into my appdata user plugins folder? I don't need those .exe files or anything else from the ffmpeg installer?

Update:

I answered my own question. Yes, that's all you have to do!

I did as Michal outlined, including changing my video prefs, and now I have zero problems.

I was instantly able to drag an p4 into my 64-bit Reaper v 4.731 and play it back. (& I don't have VLC on this machine.)

Whew.....

THANKS !!!!!!!!!

Michal, thank you for the long time add posted. This saved my day and now the .mp4 files are opening normally in REAPER 5 (32bit version). The 64 bit version already open this files normally.

Default Old thread, but helped solve my issue

I stumbled on this thread after I was unable to get Reaper to automagically convert MP4 video files to audio by drag-drop. Based on this thread, I went into prefs and swapped the Video Decoder Prefs order of first 2 items from "wmf vlc" to "vlc wmf", and that fixed the issue. Thanks all!
