I have not managed to get the wineasio set up working and assume that as I am not going through Jack that that is why the latency is high in this set up. I have messed about with buffer sizes and numbersa and can not get a lowish latency without lots of pops and squeaks.

Its been a bit of a slog to get onto Linux, I started to experiment with Linux at the end of last year and had a couple of systems running inside my Mac and a small version 30mb that can boot on any computer off a flash drive called Slitaz.

I Had windows 7 loaded at the same time and got seduced by the Windows Media Centre and ran that system too long on this Net Book, it is just so big and uses so much processing.

This system runs at these levels of CPU useage,





I am having some latency problems at the moment and will be trying to get the levels down but as I have recovered the system from a crash Last night and have everything up an running again I am quite pleased, Next up to get Amplitube working and then tweaks to improve latency etc. Also explore the native Linux stuff including the various DAWs. etc.

I have Amplitube running same latency issues as Reaper as not running in Jack I don't seem to be able to connect these two wine mounted systems back into Jack. As I am mostly interested in recording real time live video of the outputs of the modeled sounds Latency is a big issue.

Next Task is to get the reaper plugins search to find the Amplitube plugins to sun thiose in Reaper, it worked perfectly well in Windows 7 but they just do not seem to be anywhere that either I can or the Auto scan can find them, they are obviously there somewhere as they work in Amplitube.





The CPU load is very satisfactory in windows 7 it was flat out all the time and crashing particularly when playing hard.

Almost there a few more steps to the finishing line the hard yards seem to have been covered.

This certainly looks promising. I'm just itching for an excuse to get off the mac for good, and Reaper on linux could very well be that solution. I'm afraid I'm having some trouble with the installer though.

I read through this thread, and searched and googled, but couldn't find anyone having the same problem. Anyway, here's my situation. I start the installer, select the default installation location, and it downloads reaper, but always stops with this error message:

wine: Bad EXE format for Z:\tmp\linreaper-reaper-install.exe

It doesn't matter if I run it from the terminal or not, I get the same thing. I tried two different releases I found throughout this thread, both of which result in this error. What could I be doing wrong?

x371322, that error certainly looks a bit odd. My guess is that the download of Reaper somehow got corrupted.
What you can do is download the (32bit) installer from Reaper's website yourself and then tell LinReaper to use that instead of letting it download it itself.

x371322 i\m not in a position to help but thought i\d just make a note of encouragement.

My Ubuntu Studio system crashed when I returned from holiday and I have re installed Zorin another ubuntu Distro which is very good and easy to use particularly for those of us new to Linux.
I have also been trying to download FX studio and have looked at studio 64. FX is supposed to download with Reaper i8nstalled already and may be worth a try I have VM tools on my mack and have SLitaz, WIndows 7 , Debian and Studio FX all installed although I have yet to get FXstudio running properly yet.

Reaper runs very nicely on my Mac here but I am keen like you to get totally into the Linux opensource world.

I have put my Netbook project on the back burner whilst getting my home studio set up where we have just moved to, my system at home has always been based around Mac and Logic with Amplitube Live for travelling on a windows XP or Windows 7, the linux reasper combination does seem unbeatable for processing economy and therfore potentially the best latency results for the
lowes processing capability ultimately scaling up from a pared down travelling system into a home studio should allow greater functionality for the more powerful hardware useable in the home studio by using Reaper instead of Logic i find I can already run more video capture on my I mac as Reaper asks less of the CPU.

Good luck with your install, my only helpfull suggegestion is try one of the distros where the trial version of reaper comes pre installed FX studio is the only one I am aware of but there may \well be others.

so I went ahead and used this and for some reason I had to change the reaper.sh to point to reaper.exe with the full path. It would not start reaper. Ran in terminal and it said
wine: cannot find 'ProgramFiles\REAPER\Reaper.exe'

so i opened the reaper.sh script changed the location of reaper.exe
from $ProgramFiles/REAPER/Reaper.exe to
/home/ben/.local/reaper/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/REAPER/Reaper.exe and it works

anyone have this happen its on line 206 of the .sh file

This has to do with linreaper and not reaper itself, but I think someone will find it usefull.

I was playing around and used the linreaper plugin installer to install other music apps that need asio....I have FLStudio installed now the same way as reaper

a few tweaks if anyone wanted to try it out. It works good!

1 - install your program with linreaper vst installer.
2 - go into the .local/reaper directory and open reaper.sh with GEDIT or other text editor
3 - go to line 206 and change the path to the path of the exe file of the program you installed under .local....(for example my flstudio install is /home/ben/.local/reaper/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Image-Line/FL Studio 10/fl.exe )
!!!! SAVE IT AS 'fl.sh' so you dont ruin your reaper launcher!!!!

4 -mark fl.sh as executable
5 - you can create a launcer with bash pointing to fl.sh anywhere you want as a launcher
i.e mine is in /home/ben and it is FLStudio.sh and all it is inside is
#!/bin/sh
/home/ben/.local/reaper/fl.sh

just run that in terminal or create a launcher with gnome panel or a dock or whatever you use to launch apps with using this as a command

I think I've fixed the error you were experiencing now, so could you test a version of reaper.sh and see what it outputs?
This test version is at:

and post the output in this thread.

ok so I changed line 226 to

eval "wine '.local\reaper\.wine\drive_c\Program Files\REAPER\Reaper.exe' $args"
(notice no "\" before .local, i tried it on every dir below that with no success )

this is good as long as they install into ~/.local/

then I removed "exit" from line 75 and that allowed the script to continue and launch reaper and give the --self test results when I run ~/.local/reaper/TEST-reaper.sh

now, if I double click the .sh icon to execute as opposed to running in a terminal, noting happens, but if i create a launcher form the desktop to the .sh file it works ( I am guessing because its a hidden directory?)

so now it works .

Can you try running it again, without changing line 226?
Removing the "exit" is just fine

The thing is, if you change the path to reaper (line 226), there's no point to the testing, since any other user would have to do the same, and it should be automatic.

thats funny, I reset the file and as long as I create a launcher outside the .local file it works great.

you still have to remove exit.

Excellent!

The selftest output only shows up if you run it with the --selftest argument, and then it quits - so it's just for quick testing of whether or not paths are detected properly.

However when i try to connect to its in or out in the qjackctl I get the following:

ERROR: Cannot connect ports owned by inactive clients: "Reaper" is not active

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10, Jack 1.9.7 from KxStudio PPA, wine 1.3.24

Does anyone have any ideas? I googled for it but withou luck Help please...

Try to install Jackd1 and replace jackd2.

I'm brand spanking new to Linux, but have been using Reaper for a few years now. I just installed Mint 11.

When I double click the saved file "LinReaper0.87.run" I get an error message: "Could not open the file /home/fuadramsey/Downloads/Linreaper0.87.run.

gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding . . .

I press the retry button and get the same issue.


Please advise.

I don't know if its the best way, but rename .run to .sh and you should be good

"you might also need to make the file executable by right clicking it and selecting Properties then the Permissions tab and checking "Allow executing file as a program"."
Also, bennisixx's suggestion is perfectly reasonable.

Now it's just hanging. One window(looks like a terminal) says:

fuadramsey, you need to make sure you have "wine" installed.

There's probably some graphical installer in Linux Mint, but in any case you can install it by opening a terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get install wine

followed by enter and your password (when asked).
When this is done, try running LinReaper again.

With your script I've got Reaper running and playing sample project in Gentoo x86_64. Wow!
However, I'm unable to use ASIO yet (hangs on output device selection), guess I'll have to install WineASIO myself.

I can't get the script to run. Without sudo I get:

If I use a local version, and don't create start menu icons it still fails:

If I run linreaper with sudo, the start menu icons don't work. So, I go to the local directory change reaper.sh to point to /home/duo/.local/reaper/reaper/reaper.exe instead of C:/program files/reaper. The start menu icons still don't work, but i can run sudo ./reaper.exe. But in this case the sound doesn't work and there is no theme set.

Either way, I can't get reaper to play sounds although wineasio.dll.so is installed with the sudo version of the install. Also, I can't get into the reaper program folder unless I'm root with the sudo install.

I'm on ubuntu 11.10.

EDIT: I tried installing on my dad's old computer with 9.10 ubuntu installed and it worked with sound, although with no theme.

I built WineASIO and installed it. When Jack is not up, Reaper allows me to select WineASIO for audio I/O (but there are no input/output selections obviously) yet when Jack is up it crashes when I select ASIO output (before even showing the dialog with actual inputs and outputs).

The easiest and most convenient way to install wineasio is using this script:

it does not install a new wine-instance like cybolic does. So it installs into the standard wine directory which is /home/user/.wine/

This way you do not end up with more wine instances.

Did you instal qjackctl as well? In qjackctl you must select the right soundcard (if you have mulitple cards)

vocalfons, I did fix a bunch of problems with my audio setup (like fixing realtime permissions for audio group etc). And yes I have qjackctl and did proper setup there. The final obstacle is that I'm on amd64 and have 64-bit jackd I guess which refuses to work with wineasio (it says the client has got wrong version or something). I see references to jackbridge in many manuals regarding 64 to 32 bit jackd, but I don't have that program anywhere, neither in jack-audio-connection-kit nor in pro-audio overlay. The other option they offer is to build and run 32-bit jackd in chrooted environment, but that's too much for me. Guess I'll just try regular x86 system instead of amd64. Anyway, thanks for your help.

What you need is a 64bit jack server/client libs, and 32bit client libs. The 32bit wineasio will talk to the 32bit client libs, which know how to talk to the 64bit server via shared memory.

If you are using jack2 you have to build it with the -mixed option, for jack1 you have to build the 32bit client libs separately.

duo, something is wrong with your home directory. It seems you don't have permissions to access your own files, pretty much. I'd recommend either reinstalling or running: sudo chown -R duo.users /home/duo/

P.S. winecfg's audio test is broken, it never works, even if the sound itself works just fine from inside wine.

Ok, guys, I managed to get Reaper up and running through wineasio on Gentoo amd64. The trick was to build the right configuration of jack, which is (at least for me):

1. general use flags: multilib (not sure if required)

2. /etc/portage/package.use part:
media-sound/jack-audio-connection-kit -dbus 32bit

3. for wineasio, add pro-audio overlay, download asiosdk2.2.zip and put it into /usr/portage/distfiles/, then just emerge wineasio.
