Default Imported Wav and Mp3 tracks sound flangey and distorted

Hi All
I have just started using Reaper and any Wav or anything I import doesnt sound the same. They have a reverb and a flange sound to them.I checked the bit rate and it seems ok 16/44 and I it seems like its some Reaper Preference of Fx preference but im only guessing. They are working ok when I play them with windows media player and Audacity .
They kinda sound like theyve had a hard night out!
If this has happened to anyone let me know how you solved it? Thanks Hugh

you're playing the live mix and rendered mix at the same time. solo the track, bypass all fx on master.

Thanks For Reply,I'l have a look at that.
I since re installed on my external Hardrive and is working perfect. The difference seems to be that when installing on E Hardrive it asked to set up Audio Device which it didnt when I installed on my Laptop.
I then went back to Laptop and the Audio Device settings are the same but one is working and the other isnt.
Im happy its working of the E Hardrive but I'L check that out anyway thanks again Hugh
