Default A better bridge?

Hey, I'm a longtime Reaper user, and I use the 64-bit version with many 32-bit plugins thanks to the 32-bit bridging.

However... this feature feels unfinished. The window behavior is a mess. The "bridged plug-in may be open at top level" windows are particularly infuriating... 2 windows for one plug-in is annoying, but the way one window will come up sometimes and the other at other times without any apparent rationale puts me in a violent mood. Mixing in the modern day is a giant mess of things to keep track of already, and now I need to keep track of "levels" of plug-in windows? Then there's the behavior where reaper will constantly (yet somehow not predictably) hide the bridged plug-ins behind the main window.

And then sometimes the bridged plug-in wants to be not only on top of everything (everything, not just the main window), and again, no apparent rationale for the behavior or any way for the user to tell what exactly made the window decide to do this.

Is there no way to make the bridging behavior functionally invisible? I would prefer a better impetus for upgrading all my plugs to 64-bit than "the host can do 32-bit but you're going to need lithium."

I'm using jbridge and have been much happier using it than dealing with the 2 window issue. It does add a small frame to the bottom of the window but it's not too bad.

I think it's around $20 and worth it IMO (more so if you also use DAWs that don't support 32-bit).

I've heard of jbridge and I'd love to give it a try, but I think the fact that there IS a third-party plug-in that handles the bridging in a superior fashion to the main program's in-theory functionality in itself underscores the need for the devs to take another look at this.

I was an early adopter and beta tester of jbridge and although he does AWESOME work, the reaper bridging works just as well and is very much ONE window, unless the plugin can handle it.

Have you tried Add FX> Right click> Run as> Embed Bridged UI?

No, actually. Hm. Is there a simple way to switch over plug-ins that are already loaded without having to remove them and lose all settings?

Another thought: the undo behavior on bridged plug-ins is strange.

It is saved as a preference for each individual plug in that you set it for. So after you set it for whichever plug in, close your project and re-open it and the plug in should load that way from then on with the settings saved in your project.

I also used jBridge for several years, which works well, but have not needed it for quite a while.

Never noticed anything weird with it. Seems to work nicely over here. There is "Save minimal undo states" option when you right-click a plugin in FX browser, so try that if you notice any misbehaviours.

Thanks Azimuth, I've never seen that and it's perfect! No need for jbridge in Reaper with that option enabled...

If you have a hundred plugins this suggestion might hurt to read, but you can make a preset to save the settings. I just leave my old projects alone and make sure to embed as Azimuth suggests on my new ones

If you have a lot of plug ins you can just shift+left click the first and last plug ins under "All Plugins" to highlight them all and then right click the whole list to set them all in one go. It won't hurt anything if your DX, JS etc. plugins are highlighted because it won't affect them in any way.

This option doesn't seem to exist in OSX sadly. Unless it's in a different place for some reason...

Yep, it's only available in Windows version.

And here I was wondering if I should run a sed script on a .ini file. Sometimes Reaper's too easy. Thanks for pointing this out.

Whoa, the temptation to click "OK" and have it try to put all my plugins on one track!
